I'm actually kind of surprised this thing is so popular. (Anecdotal bullshit ahead) Most kids I know don't give a monkey's toss about the NES, and adults that are passionate about it already own the actual console. Or so I would think.
Meanwhile, local stores are overstocked with the Atari and Sega plug n plugs.

It's convenient, Bone. People will pay for convenience. The $60 price tag puts it within the realm of an impulse purchase.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I'm actually kind of surprised this thing is so popular. It has a lot going for it at MSRP. Why people would pay $300+ for one is beyond me though.samsonlonghair wrote: It's convenient, Bone. People will pay for convenience. The $60 price tag puts it within the realm of an impulse purchase.
Relative to most other plug n plays, it has gotten a lot of positive media coverage, even on sites/etc that don't cover video games regularly. Plus most others aren't using HDMI that I can think of, which would greatly boost the perceived quality on modern setups.

Customers over-paying for a "limited supply" of a new game console right before Christmas is nothing new. It baffles me; it just doesn't surprise me.
Even huge news outlets like CNN have covered the NES mini.
Yes, after years of throat-cramming from the electronics industry, the consumer has accepted HDMI as the one true audio/visual standard port. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's good to have standardization, but it's also good to have options.
Re: NES Classic
Yeah I can't think of really any other existing models of the PnPs that use HDMI. The most recent Sega, Coleco, INT, Atari stuff out of atgames is still mono(lame) RCA cable quality.
The issue is at $60 it is an impulse buy, or even a deal to someone who may already have a Wii or a WiiU or a 3DS too. When Nintendo charges $5-6 for each NES title on those, times that by 30 and you're at $60 and stuck using the non-HDMI system (in 3 of those 3 instances) and stuck dealing with all the controllers, booting, other dumb baggage. This you just flip it on, click game, play. If you throw it against the asinine prices on NES games now, hell Bubble Bobble is like what $20-25 now? SMB3 is like $15 and Zelda is $25, well that just made the $60 price tag on it and you have 27 more games to go.
That's what it looks good. Convenience, clearity(hdmi), and non rapey pricing on it.
That postmasters son is stupid to buy them now for $200 to try and flip for more. As the stock rolls in that profit he got off those first 2 at $300 a pop is basically gone and he'll be heading into a loss so if anything laugh at the moron.
$300 on ebay - fees (10%+3%+30cents), - retail ($60+tax) = $200 profit
I'm figuring $300 shipped, the fees would be like $40, and retail price = he broke even on his 2 $300 flips to buy 2 more at $200. He's a stupid stupid gambler.

Re: NES Classic
If there was an Atari (or Colecovision or Intellivision) plug-n-play that utilized HDMI output and accepted carts (and <swoon> had functional wireless, analog controllers), its sheer awesomeness would make me lose my mind.
Re: NES Classic
Million times yes. Atari is one platform i'd love to get into eventually(and maybe TG16 >_>). Even if they're games I just play here and there. I know i have one of those bizarre plug n' plays that's in a joystick but it's weird the games that are on there and I feel like i need manuals or something for these games XD

Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

What would've been nice is if there was a RN5 that had a atari slot of some sort. That would have been awesome...
