I haven't played Thief 2 since circa 2002, and I still remember that exact scenario. That says a lot about the staying power of Looking Glass' brilliant design.
Xeogred wrote:Anyways, if you thought Human Revolution was a disappointment, I fear for your health if you ever get around to Thief 4
Yeah considering its developer I don't have my hopes very high. I do own the game on 360 at least, I got it brand new for like $8. Oh and I own Dishonored, on 360 as well. Not played it yet but I will someday.

A lot of people told me Thief 3 wasn't any good, and I actually ended up enjoying Thief 3 more than Thief 2. I mean, Shalebridge Cradle was worth it on its own.
Thief 3 was George Lucas Midi-chlorians syndrome though. Way too much exposition on the Thieves Guild and things we should have never seen. I thought the story got mega bad towards the end. Went full blue cheese. And although the engine had cool physics and lighting for the time, the closet sized maps are very cumbersome. This and Invisible War crashed like crazy on me too at times, kind of hard to go back to them from a technical standpoint...

Still an amazing game though, and still had the same composer. I mean hell, I've always been more of a melodic music guy (easy comparison here, while I like Human Revolution's music, it's absolutely nothing compared to Alexander Brandon's score for the Deus Ex)... but Eric Brosius and the sound team really knew what they were doing, creating such dense, droning atmospheric melodic music that was dynamic to what was going on. I seriously can't think of anything else that even compares to the style. Except System Shock 2, because it's the same guy I think, but I don't think the music and sound was as intricately designed there as it was with Thief 1-3.

By far my favorite tracks from Thief 3, frankly maybe out of all three games:

- @ 2:48

lol, just can't praise the Thief sound/atmosphere enough!

Random note: The visuals and art direction is still really good for Thief 4, but it looks really bad on the 360 from what I've seen. I guess that's up to you if that's a big deal or not. Alien Isolation and The Evil Within are some other random cross gen games I've seen that look really bad on last gen haha... I'm glad that silly phase is over with.

I give Thief 4 a fair 6/10, but that's only if you're a fan of these types of games, otherwise it would be a hard recommendation. But yeah I honestly can still praise the art and world design, it was top notch. Didn't really have the occasional sci-fi touches that the original games did, but it did the gritty night world thing pretty well. One thing I love about these games and Deus Ex is that they never really have any levels in daylight, that wouldn't sit well with me or vibe well.

I played Invisible War and Thief 3 on PC, and I did not have any issues with crashing with either one. But, PC being what it is, everybody's experience is gonna be different.

The praise is absolutely warranted, it's okay. 8)

If you haven't played through this yet:

You absolutely should, I think you'd love it. (Just don't forget the latest patch.)

Okay, so Shadow Tower progress. I cleared the Illusion world last night, and then I cleared Monster world. I'm currently going through Death world. I think I'm getting pretty close to the end now, it's not outside the realm of possibility that I'll beat Shadow Tower tonight. It's been a very interesting experience, but I won't be sad to put this nightmare behind me.

Thief Gold

Last night I spent about an hour exploring the Bonehorde. The level design offers an interesting mix of surprises along with some new and unusual enemies. I appreciated the complete lack of living people to run across, which instead let me focus on avoiding monsters and traps. In particular the new belching dino midgets are quite interesting and unusual. I realize they are not actually belching dino midgets, but too bad, that's what I'm calling them anyway. The level design on this place is pretty impressive, going from tombs to sprawling caverns and back. Even though I spent a good bit of time exploring, I still feel like there might be things I missed. I also got to acquaint myself with the rope arrows. Those will be a useful tool.

Unfortunately for Exhuminator, I did not have a sudden "I love this game" moment when I entered the caverns for the first time and discovered the belching dino midgets. However, when I pulled myself out of the caverns and entered the towering crypts completely overrun by zombies, I did pause for a moment to look up and marvel at the scope of it. That is some awesome level design. More than half of my in-game hour was spent wandering the various narrow walkways, trying to take in the magnitude of this hall of dead. In the process I found numerous trinkets for cash and proved my technique to corral zombies, often taking on multiple undead shamblers at the same time.

More interesting to me was the golden skeleton I found pieces of. I feel like there are innumerable secrets I'm missing out on, but more importantly, I'm realizing that the real strength of this game is as an adventure title more than just a mere stealth game. I like wandering the weird halls, and I'm starting to look forward to later levels just to discover what sights I'll behold more than what enemies I'll have to face. I've heard a lot about the haunted chapel level over the years from friends who have played through Thief, so I'm wondering if it will leave the same impression with me that it left for all of them.

As of right now, I still favor the likes of System Shock 2, but I'm becoming more impressed by what I find in Thief.

That's what got me. You enter this tiny secret entrance from a tomb in the graveyard, and then go through this huge sprawling level with tons of variety and all kinds of secrets and dangers. All with no loading, beyond the initial load screen before the level begins. Today we might take no loading for granted, what with real time data spooling being a standard. But back when Thief released, it was mind blowing to be able to play levels as large as that, with no load screens to break the immersion. I distinctly remember being incredibly creeped out as I steadily made my way to that haunted moaning horn, skin crawling ever colder as it grew louder and louder.
Ack wrote:That is some awesome level design.
And that's the other side of the coin. The level designs in Thief are just brilliant. Trust me on this one, you're already impressed and you ain't seen nothin' yet.
Ack wrote:I feel like there are innumerable secrets I'm missing out on
You better believe it bud. Thief is chock full of secrets within secrets within secrets. And lore hidden in lore hidden in lore.
Ack wrote:the real strength of this game is as an adventure title more than just a mere stealth game
Bingo. Thief is a secret medieval fantasy adventure exploration game disguised as a sneaky cat burglar affair.

I bet the twisted mansion will do the trick. I'm not gonna ruin it for you though.

You'll have to forgive my fervor guys. Thief is my all time favorite game ever so I can't help myself.

Awesome. I may give the original a shot then. (If so, it will probably be in the fall. Shadow Tower seems like an autumn/winter game to me.) The lengthy playtime associated with many RPGs turns me away from them, but 15 hours sounds just right.

Sam and Max Hit the Road
Thief Gold
Contra
Mega Man 64
Unreal Gold
Ogre Battle 64
Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
Tomb Raider III
Diablo 2

Took down Contra tonight. Finally managed it on one credit.

Finished the game with one life left. Then when it looped around again I made it back to stage 3 before I fucked up and died.

Anyway, I had a blast with the game. It's certainly the most manageable Contra I've played (As I said many pages back, Hard Corps is a 30 ton monstrosity in comparison). It's also one of those games where it feels great to make noticeable progress in your skills.

For my money, the hardest levels are the Snow Field and the Hangar. I never quite got the hang of those two where every other level became quite easy, and each of them ruined a 1 credit run with domino death a handful of times.
