So I didn't get a Genesis until the end of that generation, and the games I had for it were Sonic 2, S&K, Spinball, and Shining Force II. So I've only had brief encounters with the original Sonic, while in my emulation days I made a point of snagging a S3&K rom and played through that (with Hyper Sonic). Today the cookie determined it was time to play the original Sonic.

Is it just me, or does Sonic 2 do everything better than Sonic?

I think Sonic 1 has a slightly slower pace and also some more spots where good ol' platforming takes the spotlight over speeding through the level (though there's tons of careful platforming included in all the Genesis games); see pushing the blocks and jumping about in Marble Zone.

Sonic 1 is meant to be played slow. Blast Processing be damned. Once you figure that out, amazing game.

I left off in Labyrinth Zone after getting nailed by the spikes right above the switch where you need to hop on the various moving platforms. It's a nasty section.

Play Sonic 1, then 2, and then jump to Sonic CD.

You're not missing much by skipping 3 and Knuckles.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is amazing!

By the way, how come the Robotnik music is so terrible in Sonic 1?

WTF?

Sonic 1 and CD are amazing, they're just different. Personally I prefer them over 2 by a good bit. 2 has too many throw away zones and crappy stuff near the end outside of Metropolis.

3 is weak.

Can you seriously compare Sonic 2 Robotnik music to Sonic 1 Robotnik music and not find Sonic 1 wanting?

Been playing DuckTales Remastered on PS3 and it's been much better than my experience with it on WiiU. I'm not entirely sure why either, the controls just seem better on the PS3 for some reason. Been playing with the girls and so far I'm down to the Himalayas, so not much more and should have this beat.
