Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?

I should go ahead and mention here that Freedom Planet was part of the games added to the Humble Jumbo Bundle 4. Unlike the original games in the set, the new games are DRM-free.

Mike Matei looks like a cool guy. Has some annoyances? Yeah, but every person i know has those and the guy grows on you after a while.

Mike seems immature, sure, but if that's the worst thing about him then he's still a few ranks above most YouTube personalities.

This might get me shot by a few folks here, but... I'm really not feeling the original Phantasy Star.
Don't get me wrong, the game looks fantastic, and compared to what we Americans had at the time, this stuff would be mind-blowing. But so far it just hasn't been all that fun. I've been trying to figure out what it is, and I think I've finally figured it out. It's the combat.
So, y'all know I'm a big Dragon Quest fan. The closest analogue to this would probably be Dragon Quest III, which came out a few months later... in Japan. We had to wait a while before we got it in the States. Anyway, the combat in that game is far more interesting than what's on display here. In that game, you could have mixed enemy encounters, and that dynamic really changed how you approached battles. You've also a decent amount of control over who attacks what, and your members, at least most of the time, will efficiently target almost-dead enemies and keep combat moving at a nice clip.
Phantasy Star, on the other hand, only has single-enemy-type encounters. You fight multiples of them, but they're all the same type. It's cool that they animate, and that may have been the reason they don't display multiple types of enemies in the same encounter. It's a bit like a stacked version of Dragon Quest I's combat. On top of that, your allies are absolutely brain-dead when it comes to who to attack. You'll have an enemy just sitting there waiting to be killed, and they'll hit some other one that's full strength instead, and generally allow you to absorb far more hits than you should... as well as dragging out combat. I'm pretty sure at this point that the targeting is just outright random.
It's definitely important from a historical perspective, but I think Phantasy Star II improves on this substantially, at least in terms of combat. I do like a lot of other aspects of the game, but man, it just feels like a slog right now. I'll probably stick with it, because for crying out loud, I beat Star Odyssey!

As a new user to Racket Boy I am sure I am going to get hanged for this, but I recently played through Goldeneye 64 and it is overrated.
It's weird because I used to play it, I've beaten the game before, and I played the multiplayer a lot during it's prime. It had been probably 15 years since the last time I had played Goldeneye 007, and coming back to it was not a good experience. The game feels clunky and heavy and the controls are not that amazing.
I even tried to relive the glory days of playing the multiplayer, I had my girlfriend and a friend over and we played Goldeneye multiplayer and it was basically a joke. You can argue we aren't MLG pro gamers and this and that but it was not a good experience and it wasn't because of anyone being a sore loser.
That is just my opinion though, I've read other people still love it, it is still a popular game within collectors, it is just an opinion of mine.

I felt like this even back then.BossKnight wrote:As a new user to Racket Boy I am sure I am going to get hanged for this, but I recently played through Goldeneye 64 and it is overrated.
Of course, I was playing PC games right alongside console games. If I wanted FPS, I'd just play PC.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
Phantasy Star I and II have some good qualities and some huge glaring flaws.
The dungeons in Phantasy Star are kinda blah honestly. Most are just fetch quests to retrieve some kind of weapon or armor or item. The dungeons don't "end" in any meaningful way nor do they seem to advance the plot much.
Graphics and music are stellar. I'd still take Final Fantasy over Phantasy Star any day though.

No flames here - I agree completely.BossKnight wrote:As a new user to Racket Boy I am sure I am going to get hanged for this, but I recently played through Goldeneye 64 and it is overrated.

I think it was a big game back in the day because of the multiplayer and because decent FPS games on consoles were hardly common at that time.
At this point, having been used to the Halo-style control scheme for FPS console games for many years now, I find Goldeneye to be basically unplayable.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
Goldeneye is mid 90s FPS multiplayer boiled down to a point of perfection. However it has been surpassed and can feel unplayable for the reasons that marlowe221 stated. But its core is still true. I still use it to teach people how to play FPS games since it is far less daunting to learn (literally it is hold it like a gun in your left hand, use the stick to move and pull the trigger to shoot), but the FPS world has moved on. I long for the days where you did not have to pick a load out for every FPS game.
Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I'd recommend giving the remade Perfect Dark a try on XBLA. It plays a lot better with dual-stick controls for sure.
No question that Goldeneye holds its position on account of actually being a good FPS on a console. That was a huge deal at the time. The controls are really the big hangup. I'd love to see a version done in the style of the PD remake I just mentioned.
