 My brother asked me if I could stay at my place again and I had to tell him no. My landlord said my brother couldn't stay at my place after the end of the year and I told him this. I told him my landlord could get in trouble with the county and my brother just said my landlord would have to "deal with (my brother staying with me)". When I refused he stormed off and he gave a loud "fuck you" as he went. Now I'm worried since he's dealing with a lot and I'm upset he might flush his sobriety down the toilet or worse. And the worst part is that I never asked him for anything, not money or for him to do chores or even to turn the volume down when watching WWII movies on Netflix, and catch shit for something I have no control over.

That sucks. I'm sorry to hear that.

At the risk of validating your thoughts on this issue, I don't think you did anything wrong here and it sucks that you're having to deal with the actions and emotions of others. I'll pray for your brother.

:) So since then we've patched things up. I sent him a lengthy text after work and I made it clear how I felt and how above all else I worry about him because I care.

Don't you have some pretty "interesting" living conditions? Why not rent somewhere with your brother that's not a shack?

Because the long-term rental market has been severely decimated by homeowners converting such places into short-term rentals on AirBnb and VRBO?

Good thing NYC doesn't have a big airbnb scene.

I assume you're being sarcastic, but technically operating an Airbnb just got a lot tougher, if this Wired article from September is anything to go by.

The TL;DR version is that you have to register with the city, can only rent out places you live in and only while you're there (so no renting out your place while on vacation), and there's a limit to only two guests.

Wish they'd do that in my area. I mean, I'm okay with folks renting out a spare room in a house they live in, but right now entire houses that were previously long-term rentals are getting converted into short-term places simply to make more money. Meanwhile, there's countless oceanfront and soundside rental cottages that are nice AF.

Seriously, locals actually started buying campers and setting them up in campgrounds and now those places have waitlists!

That is good news that regulations are set, but I'm sure the government there won't be reversing what was already done, or even imposing taxes on airbnb/vacant properties, so that problem is still there. It's just not made worse.

:( Glasses slipped off and the frame cracked. They're currently being held together with Gorilla duct tape.

:) Frame's fixed.

:( Now there's a bit of dried super glue on the lens. I tried warm water with dish soap and nothing.
