I went through this phase in my life from when I was in my early 20s until I was 30. I was living in a neighborhood that is a popular night life area, so I was able to meet people or get into random social situations easily any weekend. I met a good group of friends and my current partner through assisting a buddy with an online radio show during this time period, which was probably the most important thing for me during that era.PretentiousHipster wrote:Midlife crises are the best now lol. I never really had that bar/drug/party/socializing lifestyle yet, and I feel like I gotta have that at least once in my life.
However, I drifted a bit from my extended family and lost touch with a few of my cousins, which I do regret. Some of us are starting to reconnect again now. Also, from a financial point of view, a part of me wishes I stayed at my parents' home during this time and just saved up, as opposed to moving downtown and paying rent. My father encouraged me to move out shortly after I finished school, so I went with it -- but looking back, I think I should have stayed home while I had the chance, and saved up for longer.
Can't necessarily say I regret it, as I met some great people, had some fun times, and took advantage of the nightlife and social opportunities. But I probably would have been better off financially, and at that time mentally, living with family and not focusing on night life / partying as much.
My father ended up having an accident in 2016, and was in the hospital for an extended period of time, so instead of going out on the weekends, I started just going to either visit my father in the hospital or helping my mother with things around the house. After a few years of that, I got used to not going out as often, and now I'm glad I only go to bars/clubs/parties a few times a year, instead of every weekend.
Enjoy it, but be cautious out there!

I wish I had opportunities to meet people and get out of the house.
Seriously, this site comprises a huge bulk of my socializing, right behind Reddit and Facebook. I'd LOVE to be able to go to a movie theater with friends, preferably showing old Hollywood classics or foreign films or even obscure cult darlings, and then get pizza afterwards. Or maybe even get 3am cheese fries for no real reason.

Talking at us instead of talking with us does not constitute socialisingREPO Man wrote:I wish opportunities to meet people and get out of the house.

Where I'm at I'll take what I can get.
Spent a little over $40 to get a new tire and tube, as well as to get it put on.

Yeah, but then he'd have to do something. He wants people to invite him and drag him along over his reluctant protests. He doesn't want to have to go out and do the actual work of doing things and engaging with others. That would require effort and willingness to engage with novelty.SamuraiMegas wrote:That PS5 was a a months worth of hostel stays in Europe/Asia.
That's why he talks AT us and responds only very narrowly when he communicates WITH us.

It's not that I DON'T want to engage with others. It's that the "others" where I live have too little in common with me to make it worthwhile. Everyone else gets to engage with others based on shared interests, but when I do it I'm just difficult or lazy. All because my interests don't align with the interests of the general population where I live.
I could talk about my fondness for retro Italian horror and no one says a word. I could say I like zombies and suddenly I'm expected to like The Walking Dead.
I could talk about my love for Metroidvanias and rouglelikes and no one says a word. I could say I like video games and suddenly everyone's on about Fortnite or Minecraft (two games I don't really like).
I could talk about French new wave or my fave indie darlings and no one says a word. I could say I like movies and suddenly everyone's name-dropping big-budget Hollywood dreck du jour or whatever plays regularly on cable.

In what ways have you tried to connect with the nearby population? Where have you looked online for like local minds? Or do you simply expect to stumble into them at the grocery store? Literally what do you do to determine if there are like-minded folks near you? Or do you just assume nobody is into that based on very limited social interactions?
