I'm not going to get defensive about it, I'm simply going to ignore it. I don't think there is a meaningful conversation to have with that as a starting point.

And I think that ignoring hateful actions done in the name of someone you voted for is the same as condoning them.Sarge wrote:I'm not going to get defensive about it, I'm simply going to ignore it. I don't think there is a meaningful conversation to have with that as a starting point.

We have ourselves to blame, yes, but I wouldn't say all of the blame is on us. It's more complicated than that. The media gave Trump unlimited free publicity for being offensive. Hillary faced overwhelming double standards because she is a woman. The Bernie or Bust crew were so upset that they didn't get their way that they just gave up. And the spin, oh my god the spin. I feel like nobody can agree on what a single fact is anymore, let alone a best course of action.ElkinFencer10 wrote:As I said on my Twitter on Wednesday morning, the DNC has no one to blame but themselves.

Me and most of my friends are psychologists who work in suicide prevention in one of the most liberal areas of the country. This is so true. For those of you in red states, you may not understand just how intensely painful this loss was for us.dsheinem wrote: But right now many of us on the left are too busy trying to literally talk friends down from ledges.

dsh, my issue is that from the tone and tenor of your statements, you have already come to a conclusion, and you are more than willing to paint all with a broad brush. I don't think there is anything constructive that can come from that.
I also don't appreciate the implication that I'm ignoring bad actors, or that I condone said actions.
That's the extent of how much I'm going to engage at this point.

The educated voter turnout for Trump should be the end to the argument that colleges "indoctrinate" their students to lean left. If anything, there's been far too much pandering to the right in higher education because of that narrative over the past 20 years or so, and it is time that people in my profession start calling out ignorance for what it is instead of trying to validate every little bigot's precious concern that they must be some oppressed member of a majority whenever they are told that their people have done a lot of bad shit over the course of history.Exhuminator wrote:FTFYdsheinem wrote:These people might hold degrees, but clearly must never have received any kind of meaningful education indoctrination.

Trump and the RNC ran against science, against education, and against the values of coming together to learn about and respect one another's different cultural experiences. They did it while saying that colleges are a breeding ground for closed-mindedness. I fear, in fact, that they were right - but not at all in the way they meant.
Re: So the whole world is kind of falling apart...
The only broad brush I have painted people who voted for Trump with is the brush of "voted for Trump". I don't care about the reasons why, as I know they vary. My post is about about what's happened since. It is an argument about what those people did, what they need to do now, and why.Sarge wrote:dsh, my issue is that from the tone and tenor of your statements, you have already come to a conclusion, and you are more than willing to paint all with a broad brush. I figured you probably would say something like this. Suspicions confirmed.I also don't appreciate the implication that I'm ignoring bad actors, or that I condone said actions.

I'm not digging the position that you're taking here, DSH. I don't believe in collective responsibility for hateful actions, and I don't think that Trump supporters have any more obligation than any other Americans to condemn these actions.
I am having a hard time drawing a distinction between what you wrote and the frequent calls for Muslims to condemn terrorism or the "black community" to condemn crime (or for liberals like me to condemn vandalism at protests against Donald Trump's election). We are a nation of individuals, and while we each have an individual responsibility to condemn these action, none of us has a special responsibility.
