I'm asking if in single player there's a strong narrative, or if it's just solo loot grinding?

You're not grinding for "loot" per se in single player.

The game is centered around quests, by completing these you'll gain gold and experience and item drops.

The entire game consists of one "hub" (a JRPG town, essentially) and four dungeons. You'll be visiting these dungeons repeatedly to complete the quests. If you try to play the game straight through with no questing/grinding you'll find yourself severely under-leveled and helpless.

Simply put, the quests give flair to what would otherwise be dull traditional level grinding. Overall the game is reminiscent of Diablo, but much much better. The combat and controls are silky smooth and the scenery is incredible. Very "addictive" experience. I recommend the game hardcore.

Yeah I had trouble getting into Diablo, yet trouble stopping myself from playing PSO.

Pretty much my brother's experience, too. It's a really pretty, controller-driven Diablo. It's actually quite solid, even if I was bitter about not getting Phantasy Star V.

Ah, who am I kidding, it probably would have sucked anyway. I'll enjoy what we got! :)

Sounds good. One last question then; did you play through it on Dreamcast, GameCube, or PC?

(Also I think you would enjoy Dark Cloud 2 on PS2.)

Dreamcast! I have both the original and Version 2 (which is essentially identical, especially if you play offline).

Dark Cloud 2 is one of those games I own but probably won't get around to playing until 2020 or so.

I love Dark Cloud 1 & 2! I pretty much love all Level-5 games though ... so I may be biased. :)

You should be fine playing it anywhere, though. I've got V1 and V2 for Dreamcast, as well as the combined version that's on XBOX. I can't remember if I've got the GC version, though. I still remember us talking about the issues with not having a XBL account with that version. Mine still works because I created a profile for it back in the day. And I think there are a few workarounds.

Well does V2 on Dreamcast include Episode II's content? I was under the impression that the GC, Xbox, and PC (Blue Burst) versions included additional content (Ep.2) not found in the original Dreamcast release.

V2 is not Ep. 2. The former bumped the level cap of the original game up from 100 to 200, added an Ultimate difficulty (which is like a new coat of paint on the existing four stages) some new quests, and a mountain of new equipment. Ep. 2 is more of an actual expansion, with new stages, plot elements, a new class, etc.
