What RPG are you playing right now?
Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
Dang it, now I really want to play DQIII right now.
Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
Someone requested I do a video about the Hunter X Hunter games for my YouTube channel so I managed to import the PS1 games for cheap. But most of the games were apparently released for the WonderSwan, which I've always just been sort of on the fence about getting.
Anyway, been trying out Maboroshi no Greed Island, which turned out to be a 2D dungeon crawler. Kind of a shame since the Greed Island virtual reality mmo card game thing in the anime seems waaaay more interesting than this game. I was hoping it might have some inspiration from the card collecting with usable abilities at least.
Still, I'm having some fun with it. You control a character made for the game, but other characters from the anime can join your party. It's a mix of turn based and action, as you approach on-screen enemies and attack them, but you can select your next attack after each enemy attack. The other characters will automatically attack anything next to them, but you can choose their attacks/ablities instead. You also don't keep levels outside of the dungeons, but keep points to learn new abilities and can level up equipment permanently. Pretty fun little game so far.

That's cool. We're in the same mindset, incidentally. I hope to replay I - IV before the year is out. I have beaten them before, but never in their original format (I owned the GBA Phantasy Star Collection before I even had a Genesis!).Kidpanda wrote:I've beaten I and II yeas ago, but it's time to finish off the main games. I'm not looking forward to III, (although I may be surprised), and IV I've started so many times, it's time to end it. After those I may try to play the Gaiden games.BoneSnapDeez wrote:How far are you taking this Phantasy Star thing?
III is not a bad game by any stretch. Like II, it almost feels like an 8-bit RPG with a 16-bit coat of paint. I actually enjoy it more than II, as it's far more straightforward and the dungeons aren't nearly as tedious. II admittedly has superior music and a better overall art direction though.
If you've never played it make sure you hit up Phantasy Star Online sometime as well. It's the best game to bear the "Phantasy Star" name in my opinion.
And while Gaiden and Adventure both look intriguing I regrettably don't own either one. I'll certainly get them in the future, especially with the Retron 5 Game Gear attachment looming.

I think PS III was a fine game, definitely a great JRPG compared to its contemporaries of the era. It just pales in comparison to PS, PS II, and PS IV. But given how god tier awesome those were, that's not all that damning.
Even in the offline single player mode?If you've never played it make sure you hit up Phantasy Star Online sometime as well. It's the best game to bear the "Phantasy Star" name in my opinion.

between this and the whole PC gaming thing, I feel like I've really molded you into the man fine man that you've become.BoneSnapDeez wrote: If you've never played it make sure you hit up Phantasy Star Online sometime as well. It's the best game to bear the "Phantasy Star" name in my opinion.

Most certainly. Actually, this is the only way I really play it.Exhuminator wrote: Even in the offline single player mode?

Glad you approve.

I've played PSO extensively, online and off. I was lucky enough to get a broadband adapter during its launch and at least dumped 2-300 hours into PSO ver 1. Man I miss playing that with my buds. F the mines though.

Caves are my bane. I can live with the ruins having 3 floors, its at the end, but the caves take sooo looong.
Third area in Ep2 is boss af.

Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
I`ve got the GC version of PSO, but not the Plus variant. I bought it years ago to play offline split-screen co-op with my fiancee. Turns out that in that mode NPCs won`t talk to you and basically the entire story is stripped out. We were disappointed about that and shelved it. But maybe I should play it single player instead. I thought the game was just a loot grinder though so single player didn`t seem that rewarding. Is there more to it than loot grinding?
