I hit 30 with my Warlock and have three different exotics all maxed out.

Also have the Vex at 324 damage, the recent raid patch made it much harder.

Vex Mythoclass is generally regarded as the "holy grail" gun as you have have a slim chance of it droppign when you finish the hard raid. I got it on my second run through. All exotic weapons other than the Mythoclass top out at 300, it tops out at 324.

AKA, I am ready for the DLC lol.

Whenever you want bud, I am home most days as I am on Uni break.

Question, do i need friends online to play?
I'm currently soloing everything (just a couple of missions - level 4) and see other people. I don't know the etiquette to either team up or stay away.

No you don't need friends online to play. Some of the strikes will automatically pair you up with people. I find the game (especially the endgame) to be much more interesting when you're hanging with your buddies.

Spoke to Dave, at 10PM Dave's time (1hr 15mins) we will be doing a Normal Raid. So far we have Dave, myself and my friend Matt.
