Re: POLL: Together Retro 2014 Nominations & Discussion Thre

Post by mjmjr25 »

Why not just have everyone name their top 12 games. Give it 5 days. I think the consensus from posts has been we shouldn't force a sports title or limit platformers, etc - so there is no need to divide by genre. Just name your top 12.

After 5 days, the 12 games mentioned the most times are the 12 games selected.

No other posts other than your 12 picks to keep it clean and make counting easy.

That is way to simple to work.

I don't see why we have to vote again and have games that were the top in the genre no longer be leading because of people changing their minds. We don't need anymore new games nominated either to make things confusing. Not everyone is going to come back and name 12 games. We have the votes organized and documented and AJ did a good job with that, so let's just take off the genres that didn't receive enough votes and just have polls for the ones that are tied and have the games that have the most votes in each genre make it to the calendar. The idea from dsh's latest post followed by what AJ suggested (especially since he's willing to do it) I think would be best. Let's close up nominations and voting, and have him make a new thread to get everything together. I just want this process done.

EDIT: After looking at all the votes from AJ's document, I found 12 genres that look to have enough votes for a go (in no particular order, ones that would require poll or more votes listed first):

Puzzle - Lost Vikings/Oddworld (create poll for this one)
MMO - PSO/FFXI (create poll for this one)
Action - Metal Gear/Monster World (create poll for this one)
Fighting - Warzard/Eternal Champions (create poll for this one)
Horror - Phantasmagoria/Blood/TOTD (Vote for 2 or keep the 3? TOTD isn't terribly long)
Platformer - Psychonauts/Ape Escape (it's tied, but I'd vote for Psychonauts to break it)
RPG - Ultima IV (dont think COTW is gonna make it, it's a few votes down)
Beat Em Up - Capcom medieval/RPG-based (KoTR/KOD/SOM/TOD)
FPS - Deus Ex
Run & Gun - Shock Troopers
Shmup - Ikaruga
Rail Shooter - Space Harrier

That's 12 genres. What do you all think? I'd say work with these and get polls out on the close ones.

It's good but I really really really disagree with Metal Gear and Monster World occupying the same spot. I mean action isn't really a genre either, it doesn't tickle my fanny right.

Even though I was the one who grouped them like that, I totally agree. Action was just my catch all genre for a lot of things that are harder to nail down. Those games aren';t much alike at all.

Also, why does Eternal Champions get on your list with 4 votes, but Klonoa or The Longest Journey, which also have 4, not appear? Why doBlood and Deus Ex make the list even though they're the same genre?

It seems like the top choices:

Puzzle - Oddworld or Lost Vikings - 10/8
Metal Gear - 8
Rail Shooter - Space Harrier - 8
RPG - Ultima IV or Castle of the Wind - 7/5
MMO - PSO or FFXI - 7/5
Adventure/Platformer - Monster World - 7
FPS - Deus Ex/Blood - 7/5
Run n Gun - Shock Troopers - 7
Shmup - Ikaruga - 7
Racing - F-Zero - 6
3D Platformer - Psychonauts or Ape Escape - 5/5 (7/6 if we add recent votes)
Beat 'em Up - D&D arcade (or a capcom beat em up month if it was preferred) - 5
Strategy - Starcraft - 5
Sports - Virtua Tennis - 5

Thats 14 possible games, not including horror month (with the exception of Blood, the only 'Horror' game that got more than 4 votes.

As it stands, the obvious choice from votes would be to ditch beat'em up, sports and strategy and run a list of the other 11 games on the list, plus 2 'horror' games. If Blood beats out Deus Ex on the list, I guess that would open up another spot for a different genre to take up. I was really hoping to play D&D arcade or an adventure game myself!

I really don't get this MULE thing. Only a few people seem to want to play it, one of whom is the boss man who seems to have had very little to say in Together Retro since about 2008.
