Is there a complete list of SNES (NTSC and PAL) and SFC shmups out there? Is Cybernator considered a shmup? Mecha-shmup?
There are a couple. I like this Wikipedia one, though I don't agree with everything on here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Su ... oter_games

And here's the SNES page on shmups.com:

http://www.shmups.com/xenocidefiles/snes.html

And which SHMUPS do you have? Some of the guys here can offer tips and tricks, and we're always good for moral support!
Thanks! I did look at Wikipedia but that list is kind of all over the place. But that other list is more what I'm looking for, thanks

I have Gradius 3, Super R-Type, Firepower 2000, Super EDF and Cybernator (if that counts). I can get pretty far in Gradius 3 and Super EDF but the rest I'm just hopeless. The few others I've played (Axelay, SMF) I suck even worse at. I would like to get good at least ONE of these games. I appreciate the encouragement though, I will definitely need it.

Nice, thanks! Much appreciated

They're really two different beasts, different enough that if you're a Street Fighter fan you can enjoy each game for what it is. I don't have a preference of Street Fighter II versus the alpha series, it just depends on what style of gameplay I may want to play at that time but it's all good to me.

Haha, if you can get far into Gradius III, then you've definitely got the skills to plow through the others. That game is a beast. I've beaten Super R-Type, but that was ages ago so I'm not too keen on it. I did favor keeping the pod in front of me to serve as a front shield, since the majority of fire comes from that side. Cybernator is awesome, and while I view it as more of an action game with run-and-gun elements than a SHMUP, I totally recommend playing it heavily! You have to beat it at least twice to see the endings, based on a specific level that has catastrophic results.

A few tips for Super EDF: First, I use the homing shots until the final level. It lets me focus more on avoiding projectiles instead of dodging and shooting. It's weak, so some enemies will take a fair bit longer to drop, but I found it helps immensely with my survival. And since you can arrange your guns into various styles as they go up in levels, I tend to favor the rotating guns mode, where they circle around your ship. In this mode, the circling guns can block bullets that would otherwise connect, again adding another layer of protection in a playstyle that is already emphasizing survival over power. I use this mode up until the boss fights.

Once in a boss fight, I change modes to the one where the two guns lock onto a target at point blank. Again, the homing shots do low damage, but this way I can have them firing rapidly without the screen being cluttered by their shots, so I can again focus on dodging incoming shots. Now the bosses have patterns with limited deviation, so once in, it's mostly a matter of memorization. The few bosses that still give me a bit of trouble are the orange boss right after flying past the space station that gets shot up(his mini-ships are a pain in the butt) and the final boss. The others are a simple matter of remembering their short patterns and remaining consistent in avoiding them.

Once you're on the final level(past the ice snake boss), do not use the homing shots. They don't do enough damage, they don't block the bosses shots, and they don't cause any slowdown. Plus, of the three bosses in the final level, the second one launches an object which attracts all of their shots, making them useless for the fight. It's not worth taking them. Personally, I prefer the nuclear option on the final level: it hits hard, it doesn't get pulled into that second boss' energy ball, and when fired rapidly it can cause slowdown, which makes the final boss fight slightly more bearable. Because trust me, you don't want to fight that damn turtle for long.

Oh man, D-Force. Early, EARLY shmup. You want hard? There it is. Ending is rather pathetic too after all the stuff they throw at you.

Yes, we can help. If there's one thing I know about the SNES, it's the shmups.

Is D-Force really that hard? I've watched gameplay footage and always thought it looked really easy, but I've not spent more than five minutes with my copy of it.

And which are harder: the dinosaur levels or the jets and helicopter levels?

The Shooting Mode levels (1, 3, 5, 7) if only for the never ending enemies as well as the bosses are tougher. The Exploration Mode levels (2, 4, 6, 8 ) are easier, but your power ups are scaled down for some odd reason. As in, if you made it through an odd number level fully powered, you are limited 50% of that power to use on the even numbered levelss. Plus, there are no powerups in the even numbered levels, but the levels themselves and the bosses are easier because of the perspective changes you can use.

I've always wanted to get into these titles, but I have never sat down with them...Let us know about your experiences.

Also, I read about Naya's Quest the other day. It sounds like an interesting - and free! - take on the isometric view utilized in Solstice and Equinox (and their lost cousin, Altered Space).
