So, as a complete and total noob to Electronic music outside of a tiny bit of dubstep and some bands who use synthesized versions of real instruments, what would be some suggestions for electronic music?
One thing I've learned from a friend is that electronic music is a huge area of music, and that it covers a wide variety of things, so I have no idea where to start.

If only there were a 36+ page thread to give a go.

Well, I didn't know if there was any groups/artists that were generally considered a good place to start, but I will begin to dig.

(Given how diverse the genre is, it'd help if you first specified what kind of emotions should the music evoke. There are so many different styles, moods, sub and subsubgenres that it's kind of an impossible request)
This guide is WAY outdated (it's from 2005 or something like that), many genres evolved in sound (like if you pick up a genre like Hardstyle, the hardstyle that has been produced for the past 6 years or so sounds WAY different than the sample songs in Hardstyle, and this is true for many of the genres there), new genres were born and rose to prominence and the sample songs in some genres are unflattering or don't give a proper image of what the genre sounds or can sound like, but it's a start. So get clicking

One thing I'd be interested in would be any electronic music with a fantasy, medieval, or sword and sorcery theme. Possibly wizards and other such stuff too.
I'd also say sci-fi themed stuff, but I imagine thats around.

It turns out I have not given enough love to Boards of Canada's Geogaddi, and that's a terrible thing.

I agree. But only if you've already absorbed Music Has The Right.
Goegaddi has some incredible shit on it, and is surprisingly slept on.
