As a big fan of Monolithsoft games, I am really excited for whatever this is:

I think a new Xenoblade or their fabled new IP are the most likely candidates. I seriously doubt it will be the long rumored Chrono Cross remaster. I don't know why Monolithsoft would work with Square-Enix on Chrono Cross but stranger things have happened.

Nail the top crates to tbe wall, zip tie them all together would be my ghetto advice!REPO Man wrote:Would it help that these aren't the cheap-ass ones sold on Amazon? Plus I'm kind of banking on being able to assemble this in a way where I could disassemble it without removing the books so if I needed to pack everything up I'd just need to cut the zip ties or unscrew whatever's holding them in one place (carefully, obviously) and then just stuff the spaces with bubble wrap (I'd probably put some kind of foam towards the back before putting the books in) and wrap each crate in bubble wrap and plastic. Naturally a major problem comes from the scenario where I don't have a U-Haul and have to ship each crate.
I was going to put it against the wall that separates the left side of my bed and the bathroom, but this shelf would be longer that the wall it'd be against and there'd be a roughly 1" gap in the back. Plus the wall is just a sheet of plywood so I'd have to find some other way of making sure it can't tip over.
As for milk crate bookshelves:
This looks to be the closest to what I'm trying to make, except with mine I'd have it as one unit, not two.
Would putting the heavy stuff on the bottom shelves mitigate the issue of putting too much weight on the top of the bottom shelves? Would putting something between each row to absorb a lot of the shock?

I've moved a bunch of times.REPO Man wrote:Would it help that these aren't the cheap-ass ones sold on Amazon? Books are incredibly easy to pack. Individually packing milk crates and stuffing bubble wrap around the books will actually be more work than just putting all of your books into couple of carboard boxes, and you'll have wasted a lot of space with bubble wrap. Wasting volume when moving is not something you want to do if you can help it.
If you're dead-set on the milk crates, you'd do better to pack your books into half of the crates or whatever and then use the rest of them as boxes to assist in your move. They won't be optimal for this, though, because they won't have lids and don't offer any rain protection, though you can wrap saran wrap around them to mitigate this limitation.
Walmart has a Better Homes and Gardens 16x16 cube shelf that's $150 and they'll ship it to you for home assembly. It won't be as high quality as the Ikea shelf it's copying, but it's serviceable. And you can break it down flat again when you move and take it with you.
There are tons of cheap, flat-pack shelving options. Or you can find a cheap set of shelves at the thrift store and just paint them. Or you can just use 1x10 boards and cinder blocks.

Yeah, but how sturdy are they? Most of them are made of cheap particleboard. I think that's what my current book shelf is made of. I've got tons of stuff stacked on top of it and you can literally notice how it's bending under the weight.
I've also thought about using wood, but then I've got to figure out what material to use. The good stuff's expensive and the cheap stuff won't even last a year or two if I'm lucky. Plus I'd need access to tools. I've worked with a saw years ago when I helped my uncle cut wood for some steps.
But with furnishings I don't want to spend too much and I don't want it to be too flimsy. Basically in that sweet spot between cheap and sturdy.
Also, as I've mentioned in a DIY cover art thread I recently made covers for a trio of Game Boy fan-made demakes I found on itch.io that includes the Dead by Daylight game made in GB Studio I mentioned last year (where the game's creator Logichack responded) as well as demakes of Friday the 13th and Slender: The Eight Pages that were made in GB Studio by someone named JWG LLC, who liked my covers and followed me on itch.io, so naturally I followed them back.

The cheap Wal-Mart shelves I mentioned will be sturdy enough. It's all cheap medium-density fiberboard (MDF), but it compensates by having vertical supports every thirteen inches. When you don't have to span much distance you don't need stronger materials.REPO Man wrote:Yeah, but how sturdy are they? Most of them are made of cheap particleboard. You would do better to get the "real" Kallax shelves from Ikea, but the additional shipping cost would not likely be justified.
The shelves you currently have and see bowing probably have longer unsupported spans than that.
If you go the board and cinder-block route you likely wouldn't have to cut a thing, depending on your space constraints. If you're worried about bowing, just stick an extra cinder block in the middle for added support. You lost a little shelf space, but gain a lot of strength. We had a set of this style of diy book shelves at my house growing up and they lasted at least a decade before they were taken down for purely aesthetic reasons and none of the pieces were worse for wear.

Re: What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
Had a visit with the mobile crisis team on Monday, and went to the emergency last night. I'm having by far my worst manic episode. What made me go to the hospital was dancing and laughing randomly, buying a bunch of (cowboy) clothing, and wanting face tattoos. The doctor didn't wanna do anything though because he said my psychiatrist should mess with my meds.
However, I did find the culprit. We decided to lower the dose of my anti-psychotic medication because I was starting to get facial tics. I thought I felt ok because I felt great after a few weeks. Turns out it was just an episode starting.
I have new symptoms as well, which makes sense because apparently my mental health issues just get worse and worse through life by default. I won't go into detail, but hypersexuality is even worse than psychosis. Apparently 30% of people with bipolar cheat on their spouses at least 10 times. I would never dream of doing that, but feeling what I'm feeling right now I 100% understand why people wanna do that.

I'm amazed at your ability to reflect on this experience. I sincerely hope you manage to get things under a certain amount of control.
Re: What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
Yeah, man. As someone with an anxiety disorder and recurring depression which fuels problems with paranoia, I applaud you for being able to talk about and reflect on this.
Re: What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
Sorry to hear about your mental health issues, PH. I hope you're able to get on the right combination of medication to help and get everything under better control.

Re: What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
Thanks guys. February - April is when it's at its worst and I usually end up in the psych ward. I didn't go for the past 3 years because I was able to prepare myself for it since it's always the same deep depression, but now I'm at the opposite end and it's really throwing me off.
