It seems to be a very love/hate game in general. For me it was like playing a cheesy 90's game with a cheesy 90's cartoon plot and I loved it for that.noiseredux wrote:I really didn't get the love for Freedom Planet. I was really excited to give it a go. Felt let down quickly. It's weird. I loved Shovel Knight for what it's worth. And I love 16-bit Sonic Games. FP just didn't do anything for me, and I lost interest really quickly.

I wonder if a lot of the fans of Freedom Planet are those that thought the Sonic games were just alright, fun, but nothing special, and the ones that don't like it as much are those that thought Sonic was one of the absolute best? I dunno. I mean, yeah, if someone were looking for a carbon copy of Sonic, I'd be really, really disappointed in FP, because in a lot of ways, it's definitely not like Sonic. I almost feel like some of it cribs a little bit from Ristar, just in terms of level feel. And I adored that game.

maybe. I can say that I really enjoyed Sonic 1, 2 and CD. I pretty much hated Sonic & Knuckles when I last attempted it. (Oh good, we're doing that for TR next month). I can't say Ristar held my attention either.Sarge wrote:I wonder if a lot of the fans of Freedom Planet are those that thought the Sonic games were just alright, fun, but nothing special, and the ones that don't like it as much are those that thought Sonic was one of the absolute best? noise and I pretty much agree on Sonic I think.
I love 1, 2, and CD. I also enjoy Pocket Adventure for that matter.
3 and Knuckles are not good at all. I also dislike Ristar.
Never played Freedom Planet.

Very interesting. I'm not saying you're wrong! We've all got tastes, and I think I can see where folks might not cotton to the game quite as well. Good to know we're in agreement on Shovel Knight, though! That was easily my favorite game from last year, and I played a lot!noiseredux wrote: maybe. @Bone: Pocket Adventure was definitely cool. I tried to get all the emblems or whatever, but there were a few that always eluded me.
I guess it's all down to pacing. Weirdly, I think one of my favorite zones in the original Sonic is the Marble Zone. I like it when things slow down a bit, which is a weird thing for a Sonic game, I suppose, but there you go. It's also where I think many modern Sonic games make their missteps, they feel a constant need to go fast fast fast, when it's okay to mix it up a little!
I really don't like the Master System / Game Gear Sonic games. The collision detection on picking up rings drives me bonkers. I know it's a weird thing, but there ya go.

It also takes from PlayStation era Mega Man X, specifically Carol's play style.Sarge wrote:I wonder if a lot of the fans of Freedom Planet are those that thought the Sonic games were just alright, fun, but nothing special, and the ones that don't like it as much are those that thought Sonic was one of the absolute best? The game mechanics and visual style were just right up my alley but from an unbiased perspective I can see it being disappointing to others.
And I love Sonic 3 & Knuckles. I consider it one of the masterpieces of the era and one of my favorite games of all time. I'd say you made an enemy today Bone, but I don't care for Ys so we were always destined to duel to the death on top of a clock tower one day anyway.
At least we all love Shovel Knight.

Shovel Knight was fantastic. I believe I placed it #2 on my Top 10 year-end list.Sarge wrote: Very interesting. I'm not saying you're wrong! Oh, nice. What was number one? I might need to track it down.noiseredux wrote:Shovel Knight was fantastic. I believe I placed it #2 on my Top 10 year-end list.Sarge wrote: Very interesting. My brother is using Carol, I've been using Lilac. I knew the influence was there, but that just made me realize that a good deal of the combat reminds me a bit of using Zero in Mega Max X4. No wonder I'm loving it.Gunstar Green wrote: It also takes from PlayStation era Mega Man X, specifically Carol's play style.

I never expect a game to be great, just in very few ocassions, and this one i heard it was GREAT and it's was just ok in my book. That final boss though was awful.Gunstar Green wrote: Good is all you can really ask for out of Sonic. I'm tired of the expectation that it should still be amazing or on par with Mario (though this is maybe partially Sega's fault for continuing to push it so hard). It lost that battle many years ago.
I'm interested in seeing where they move after Boom since it was an unmitigated disaster.
I wonder if they take a break from sonic after the disaster of boom.
