More like a 33 RPM LP record, but smaller, shinier, and smoother. Also, I don't think you stick a needle to it. Another way to think about it is like a MiniDisc, but smaller, naked, and not magnetic for some reason. What's a UMD? Is it anything like a WMD?

It's a good joke and I'm not going to explain it!

As for the GoFundMe episode, I don't see what the big deal is. It's not like anyone here was actually going to give him money. And what are we going to talk about if we don't talk about REPO? Old video games? Yeah, right!

I bring up old video games, but since they're old PC games no one cares.

All kidding aside, I found my old MiniDisc player a few months ago. Coincidentally, I watched a wonderful, but long, YouTube video about the subject.

When I was studying in Japan MiniDiscs were pretty huge. You could get so many different models made by a dozen different companies, all using those little rechargeable gum stick NiMH rechargeable batteries. They were sort of a precursor to the MP3 player in a way, this weird half step between the CD player with its optical, uncompressed digital audio and the highly compressed flash or HD based MP3 devices. They use compressed audio to squeak out CD run times, but the audio wasn’t as nice sounding. It suffered in much the same way early MP3s did. Although, when I was in Japan ATRAC3 had just dropped and was helping sell better quality content. But they were just so compact and cute! I was so jealous I couldn’t afford one, me with my crappy Philips portable CD player (it was actually pretty good, TBH) in the land of good portable CD players.

You’re bringing back memories. I had to run upstairs to take a few pics of the one that I have. This was the last MD player I got before the iPod took off. My brother had one with some add on. I can’t remember what it did but it screwed onto the side where it made contact with two metal points. Think it was a Sony. You’d have to correct me me on this one, but in the US, I think all we ever got were blank MDs, right? I think Japan had the actual MDs that were considered an album that you could buy from the record labels.

That’s the stuff right there! That could have come right off of a display in 1998 Akihabara! A Norwegian pal of mine picked up an MD player and a stereo mic and occasionally recorded quotes (asked us to repeat them for him).

If we did get albums they were few and far between. Pretty sure we mostly just got blanks. My brother has a shelf stereo with an MD player in it and he had a few blanks he used for recording stuff off the radio.
