RPG Progress Report
Re: RPG Progress Report
Honestly, the first King's Field game looks like it will be pinball instead of an RPG.

I figured those were the testicles required to beat the game.

Re: RPG Progress Report
If you're not trollin' us and actually snagged that for a dollar... I'm insanely envious right now. Especially if it happened recently. It's not without its flaws at times, but I find it to be one of the most unique RPGs ever. That it doesn't wear out its welcome (my last playthrough came in under 20 hours) is also a huge plus.
I can't even begin to imagine how awesome a remake of the game would be. Don't even touch the gameplay, just touch up the graphics, because that engine really shows its age. The art design is great, and really deserves to shine through (and it does sometimes).

Here we go, Phantasy Star Generation 1!
Played for about an hour, Alis is like level 7 or 8. Wandered about towns talking to people, wandered about Medusa Cave for a bit, and then finally hit the right sequence over in Scion to get my ROADPASS.
So this is one of those games with dialogue triggers, eh? Might have to bust a guide out if I get too stuck.
Anyways, off to get foods. Then I'll probably catch up on Lucha Underground with a buddy, but I'll be back to this later tonight.

Whoa. Going with the remake, huh? I've been meaning to get that for ages.
I derped around a bit with Deep Dungeon this evening.

I've seen websites describe this game as sort of a made-in-Japan WRPG, but that isn't quite accurate. Deep Dungeon features the same sort of super-simplistic combat found in the likes of Dragon Quest and lacks any sort of character customization or stat distribution.

To be honest, I find first-person games a bit disorienting. This is amplified in Deep Dungeon because you can only see three "squares" ahead and to the side. So when you're traveling down a long wide stretch of hallway all you see is darkness.

Naw, I was jus' trollin'. I'm playing dirty pirate ISOs via SSF.Sarge wrote:If you're not trollin' us and actually snagged that for a dollar... I'm insanely envious right now.
SSF plays the game well, but every now and then it hard freezes out of nowhere. So I'm having to make copious savestates to get around that. However, PDS has seemed worth the trouble so far. Very unique RPG.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

I wasn't kidding about offering a trade of Kirby's Air Ride for Steel Battalion though. That offer is legit.

you should use this:TSTR wrote: So this is one of those games with dialogue triggers, eh? Might have to bust a guide out if I get too stuck.

Also, you should use maps for the dungeons. It gets confusing in first person. This is a text-only translation of the Official Phantasy Star Walkthrough that was sent out to people who called Sega's old toll-free hintline. All relevant text is a direct quote from the guide. Additions made by this author are in brackets []. Links to each map that is referred to have been added. Use this guide discretely, since a blind, step by step following of the text can detract from the gaming experience.
But get past that and you'll find an amazing RPG. It's maybe hard for you to appreciate playing the remake, but this game originally came out in 1987, just a year after Dragon Quest and the same year as Final Fantasy. In my opinion, it blows both of those away in terms of scope. You recruit a party and traverse multiple planets. There are even insane plot twists that blew my mind when I first played it six years ago. This game instantly made me a fan of this series.
I'm not even sure I'd say that the first Phantasy Star is my favorite. But I'd still call it a 10 out of 10. Stick with it. It's brilliant.
