Ars Technica has an article covering more updates on this. Nintendo is apparently reminding folks that they intend to produce significantly more of these units than of the NES Classic.
"I would strongly urge you not to over-bid on an SNES Classic on any of the auction sites," Fils-Aimé told the paper. "You shouldn't [have to] pay more than $79.99."

Fils-Aimé also reiterated that the demand for the original NES Classic Edition far exceeded the company's expectations, which were based on the performance of similar low-budget plug-and-play systems from other companies

I have a feeling they're being honest this time.

They only allowed one small round of preorder but have blocked further. They either arm twisted or retailers shamed into it canceling any multi-system orders stealing back the scalper booty -- yet not reoffering it up for preorder sale either.

You have the Nintendo conman there saying they'll want to have far more out, but they've otherwise kept quiet, and blocked more of these sales. I think they may actually do it this time. Bad press for them right now wouldn't be good. Also they know how passionate Nintendo fans can get and vindictive too. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch with them also withholding many Switch systems to stock up for the holiday season for many countries they need to balance the good and the bad.

Would it be in their favor to infuriate a lot of people with a scalper re-run given the comments online of people saying they better get one or Nintendo can kiss my ass? I think they may care because the wallet is the only way to hurt them. If they think fans will be like if you can't follow through on this, then I'm not buying a Switch or more switch games his season. That wouldn't look good at all with it being its first Christmas, the one that'll really tell how popular it is and help drive more interest in third party wall squatting wafflers into making games or not.

A little good PR and ample supply to make scalpers suffer and allow people to get that thing would go a long way.

I gotta agree with Tanooki. Given that these things are (to the best of my knowledge) more of a PR and public thought mindshare-move than a directly profit-motivated one, it does make sense that they'd wanna avoid outright fucking people over if they can. Let's hope they actually produced enough this time!

Reggie also talks about challenges with producing adequate numbers of Switches in that article. And it all seems at least reasonably credible.

Don't get me wrong if you think I believe or like Reggie, I never really have, seems like a corporate creeper suck up who got a big head from public perception on his power. I'm just thinking of it from a good vs bad thing. A year ago that NES I buy it, they're dumb to a fault and probably didn't think it would roll along as mediocre as the Sega offerings, the Atari, or the stagnant Int and Coleco boxes among other random little to no name turds that jack straight to the TV with no game input from an outside source. It hurt them hard in PR and right up against them being ripped for a good year on their amiibo stupidity.

They're being screwed at the moment with the NAND issue because Apple put out a huge purchase to get much of them for their mass production of the new flavor of iPhone/iPad dropping anytime now, they fought for the continued scraps. And he's being almost too honest in not naming what but admitting that other parts are a pain in the ass too. Some online speculation is that it's the rumble HD in the joycons because that factory has trouble putting out the functional quantities they need too so maybe it is.

This is yet more bad press.

So it makes sense to not only go into damage control against that crap, but also take a two pronged attack against it as well to save PR face and look like the good guy. By allowing piece of shit human garbage to scalp the hell out of the SNES CE would show they don't care about their loyal base those who stuck with them and those who have fence set impatiently wanting that device and a Switch too. So they'll mass produce this one to the tune of millions more than the NES CE ever got (which was 2M if I recall.)

They're admitting enough they're withholding some Switch stock because they want millions for the global holiday season in many markets around. It's the Switch's first Christmas and people would love nothing more to hang them out to dry if they have crap sales, especially if the crap sales were because they couldn't deliver because they're not lacking for demand like the piteous horrid WiiU. If they allow the scalpers to win it will cost them sales, good pr, and good will with those wanting to pay them and they'll go to the PC, Sony and MS and pay them instead.

WiiU screwed them, they don't need the Switch being their latter 90s Sega set of moments of a shining awesome system and then out on their ass because of losses as far as the fans and sales go. They can't afford to alienate people again with scalping and no supplies but people will bail because enough will have been enough, same with Sega with the Saturn, 32X, CD, killing the Gen+GG. Dreamcast may have been amazing but they ran so many off and put out a weaker same generation system they got smoked. Nintendo doesn't want to be 90s Sega.

I have heard hearsay that Switches are slowly becoming easier to find. My brother went into the Nintendo World Store and just bought one the other day, and several other people (at least near his area) have reported seeing them sitting on shelves in their local Target or what have you. The last big shipment Gamestahp got in, back around when the SNES classic was up for pre-order, stayed in stock for like 4 or 5 whole days in some places, so far as I saw! Nintendo does seem to be getting better at delivering product. It's a shame their initial estimates were so conservative as to be self-harmful. Let's hope they really get it right (or at least better) with the SNES classic :)

Last week, there was a Switch sitting on the shelf in my local Wal Mart. That's the first time I've seen a Switch in stock there.

I'll add to your hearsay -- Best Buy, Saturday around 11:30am I found 7 of them in the glass case, and they don't get weekend shipments as far as I can remember so those had been there since Friday morning more or less. I hadn't seen any in a case for a couple months when they last popped up at the Meijer I shop at for food.

Also SNES CE news breaking now, production will roll into 2018 and not stop after Christmas. And as a bonus also in 2018 (summer) the NES CE returns with lots more stock to get people what they want and in turn screw scalpers.

So it is a good thing Toys R Us didn't do preorders of this. They may go bankrupt this fall shortly before Christmas.
