I know there are a lot of people in this forum who either make or watch YouTube videos, especially gaming ones. Here is a little behind the scenes of making my videos that hopefully people will find interesting. If you have questions about equipment, software or process let me know!

I'm not making videos, but good info for those that are. The first point applies to people's game room threads and finds pictures though. More light. When in doubt, more light. If it seems too bright, you can knock it down and increase the contrast a little. It will turn out better than starting from a dark picture and are going the other way.

Wow very informative! Besides the great dialog; all the background techniques are why your videos are an entertaining watch. Good point on the no scripts and just have a listing of bullet points to keep on track yet till keeps the video lively.

Woah, that first beginner tips video was super, super informative. Thanks so much for making it! I picked up a lot, and you're super easy to listen to, so I never wandered away or got bored.

I've got two questions for you about capturing from consoles, if you have time to answer. First, I've got an XRGB-mini Framemeister through which I play all of my older consoles, and the Framemeister outputs HDMI. Unfortunately, I'm using a laptop without HDMI input, and I don't know when I'll be able to upgrade to a desktop. I know there are devices that will convert HDMI to USB. Is that worthwhile? I know the quality suffers, but I'm wondering if it's a good stepping stone for someone like me who's not yet as serious about her YouTube material.

Second, if I do upgrade to a desktop with HDMI input, will I still need something like the elgato if I already have a video editing program that can capture footage? I'm wondering if I can just plug in the Framemeister and be good to go. But if that were so, the elgato would have no reason to exist, right?

EDIT: Oh! Looks like the elgato does the conversion to USB?

Thanks!

Yes, the Elgato Game Capture HD takes HDMI or Component and sends to USB, which is how I use it...and it looks FANTASTIC. All my PS3, Xbox 360, or Retron 5 footage is captured that way. BTW: My laptop is a 4 year old Macbook that is ancient by today's standards, so you don't need anything powerful.

Now I suppose if you bought a new computer with HDMI in, then you could just use software to do the capturing, but I suspect there could be a bit to framerate if the computer has to work hard to do it. Not sure, since I've never done it.

Also.. I have a question for you, how many inputs does the Framemeister have? I have almost 50 consoles now and finding a solution that doesn't cost $1,000 thousands of dollars is tough!

Ah, the mini doesn't have a ton of inputs; I switch my consoles out when I play. That said, it's got the input types for everything, except VGA (alas, poor Dreamcast!). The only extra thing you might need is a converter cable if you use European SCART.

Here's everything you need to know: http://retrogaming.hazard-city.de/framemeister.html

And here's a breakdown on Reddit that's actually pretty good: http://www.reddit.com/r/gamecollecting/ ... nsoles_to/

You might want to look into the XRGB-3, which has a lot more inputs. Scroll about a third of the way down this page: http://retrogaming.hazard-city.de/micomsoft.html

And you know what, my mini as a USB out that I never too notice of. That might be my solution! I'll have to experiment...

I'm going to film a new Game Room Tour soon where I show how I managed to solve connecting a bunch of different consoles to my HDTV. It's a spider web of splitters and adaptors...BUT it works and everything looks great.

Wii On-Rails Light Gun Shooter Games
http://youtu.be/NsmAgbznw2A <<--YouTube

The Nintendo Wii had a ton of great On-Rail Light Gun games for the console, both original and arcade ports. I show you some of my favorites from the collection!

Games Shown:
Gunblade NY & LA Machineguns Arcade Hits Pack
Sin & Punishment: Star Successor
Ghost Squad
Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles
Mad Dog McCree Gunslinger Pack
Dead Space Extraction
House of the Dead Overkill

What other games should I add to the Wii on-rail/Light gun game collection?
