I am curious to know what you think should be done in indie titles?

I hate touch screen controls.

I dislike touch controls for most games. I'm OK with them for some interfaces, but not for most games. See, the screen is how you SEE what's going on. And when your grubby meat sticks are between your eyes and that screen, it becomes difficult to see what's going on.

So, inherently poor choice for most games, all other things aside.

The only game I've ever enjoyed playing with my fingers is...not appropriate for public consumption. Well that and Angry Birds, because it's one of the only ones with a well thought-out finger to screen interface.

What I hope is that the people who made Shovel Knight, or Cave Story or Freedom Planet or whatever keep making games. They had a great start into the genre and they could make some really good games if they keep honing their craft. It's simply unlikely to have a new developer design the next Contra: Hard Corps out of nowhere,

As far as Cave Story is concerned, Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya has made another game since then. It's called Kero Blaster:

Guess how many of these "OMFG CAVE STORY OMZHR!" kids have one iota of a clue about his other work? Oh but the hype train doesn't toot toot that way you see.

I've got that Ikachan game on 3DS. I never made a lot of sense of it, just didn't click like Cave Story but it's not bad by any means but it doesn't feel like it as a good sense of direction.

I've never played Kero Blaster before so I have no idea how that one works.

On ios there's also Azarashi which I can't figure out from pictures, and a free action shooty game called Pink Hour too. Shame neither are on android or PC.
