I just finished Saint's Row The Third not too long ago, I had the same experience.
That's the exact thing that turned a lot of people off SR3 and 4, especially. The people who've been with the series since the start, when it was like a grimier GTA, aren't exactly fond of the ridiculous direction the games have taken.
On the other hand, there are plenty of people like myself who never wanted a GTA clone, and love the way SR3 and 4 panned out.

I am currently playing Half Life for the summer gaming challenge. (I am playing the PS2 port which, once you have adjusted the settings a bit, is actually pretty solid.) I am enjoying it so far - I will probably finish up the "On a Rail" section this evening - but I will probably will not beat it until after my vacation.
I am also playing Box Boy!, a fun 3DS puzzle-platformer designed by HAL Labs. It is also a lot of fun so far, and it contains a ton of features for a $5 eShop game. It is also the second monochrome 3DS puzzle-platform game I have played this year, and it is easily the superior of the two. (It is drasticaly less challenging, however.)

Nah, the 360 is my newest console. I do plan on getting a PS3 next, and probably five years down the road I'll get an xbox one.
There are some PS3 exclusives I'd like to play, and the price points for the system and games seem fair.
Trying to set up a 4 player Tekken Tag 2 Tournament for the weekend. I don't have a friend that is single, so a couples tournament would be a lot of fun.
My wife always uses the cheapster Eddy Gordo. Although I'm great with Bryan Fury and Gun Jack (both incredibly strong characters) my fave is Ling Xiaoyu. She has about, what, four different stances that all create different moves? Not sure if she has the most moves of any character, but she's so fun to play with.
But if I'm getting my butt handed to me...Bryan all the way.
So, I booted up Strife: Veteran Edition last night. I remember downloading it from an abandonware site back in the day... or maybe I had the demo on one of my shareware discs. Either way, it's effectively a shooter with RPG elements, done in the Doom engine. The new version adds a bunch of shiny resolution options, OpenGL, and other such niceties to make it run better on modern machines, but it's mostly untouched.
It's also got that mid-'90s comic book vibe. That intentionally edgy sort. Like... Image Comics, perhaps? Anyway, I don't know if I'll actually stick with it, but it's a neat little game, and worth the whole $1 I dropped on it over at Groupees.

Oh man, I wasn't aware someone had done a re-release of this. Why isn't this on GOG yet? Night Dive Studios is also doing an update to Powerslave!
