Just wanted to share my pick-ups from August, which all came from the Long Island Retro Expo. The games from the first pic came with my entrance ticket, in which you had the ability to choose two indie Dreamcast games. The second pic contains the games I came across while browsing the vendor area at the expo.

Shadow Gangs (DC) - An action platformer in the vein of the Shinobi series. From what I've played, the game seems to be pretty tough. It's going to take a fair bit of practice to get through this one.

Intrepid Izzy (DC) - An action adventure game in a similar style as Wonder Boy in Monster World or Shantae. I've seen this highly rated in a few lists of the best indie DC games. Looking forward to diving into this one.

Crazy Taxi (DC) - I'm starting to build up my DC collection a bit and considered this one an essential for the console. This is also one of my partner's favorite arcade games.

Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage (DC) - 3D beat 'em that I missed out on when it was released. My cousin also recommended this game and his taste is pretty top notch, so I'm excited to put more time into it.

Vandal Hearts (PS1) - I played through a bit of this strategy RPG via emulation years ago and enjoyed it more than I was anticipating. Glad to finally own a copy and can revisit this on my home setup.

Breath of Fire (SNES) - The few times I came across this cart, it was in rough shape. Another title checked off from the few remaining SNES RPGs I want to pick-up.

Breath of Fire II (SNES) - This game has eluded me the past few years as well. Even though the cart is quite yellowed, I couldn't pass it up.

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (GB) - My cousins owned this game when I was a young, so I only played it a bit with them. After beating Super Mario Land last year, I wanted to finally play through this as well.

There has been some fantastic recent pick ups!

AJ, Suikoden II?!?! Wow! That is insane. I think I paid $120 for that about 20 years ago and I thought it was worth every penny. One of the best RPG's ever made!

And Note, those are some fantastic picks up from your convention! Vandal Hearts is very good, especially if you are a fan of Fire Emblem. I really enjoyed Vandal Hearts II, so look into that one as well, though that is a bit more divisive. And Breath of Fire I & II are classics and I'm happy that you finally have them!

Fantastic pick ups right there!

Man, I love Sword of the Berserk! My brother's friend had it when we were kids and I was instantly blown away. It was my first exposure to the Berserk franchise and I just instantly fell in love with the world and characters. I went on to pick up the game myself and then get into the anime (and then later on the manga).

The game had great graphics and really good gameplay. It's mostly a hack and slash game, so not a whole lot to it, but it's a really good one. The only issues is the collision detection being too good (in retrospect, maybe they should have just allowed the giant sword to clip through walls instead of constantly hitting them when you are in tight corridors and trying to attack enemies) and save points being infrequent (I think there are only two or three 'checkpoints' in the game and it's not really obvious where they are. You can quit and save your game whenever you like, but it will take you back to one of those checkpoints the next time you play). Otherwise though, if you can look past those quirks, it's a really good game.

There's a sequel on PS2, but it was a Japanese exclusive. I think there might be an English fan translation patch for it now.

...lots of good pickups for sure, Note the games and custom VMU you go from the Long Island Retro Con are very cool. I may have to add that convention to my list next year. August was pretty chill for pickups initially, I got a few things for my b-day from my family and then caught some sales later. I'm taking a slight break from adding classic games to the collection and I think I did ok. I'm glad to finally get my hands on Elden Ring and Broforce should be a riot w/my kids, but Citizen Sleeper is a game I really enjoyed and once I found a physical copy was available it was a must purchase.

Image

...the real August surprise was that a good friend gifted me a bunch of games since he needs more space for another hobby (that's an equally deep rabbit hole  ). Classic Xbox games will always have a home in my collection, the other games are really cool too. I was incredibly surprised by the NES 2 he passed along; I never had any plans to expand into the NES library, but once I get this system RGB modded it's time to start find those 8-bit Nintendo classics.

I added Columns III for the Sega Genesis this morning!

After going to my Convention and buying a bunch of games from there, it was time to buy games for the consoles that I did not purchase at the convention. After beating some games, I realized that I needed to pick up a Genesis game, so I decided to purchase one I had been meaning to pick up for quite a bit. I enjoyed the original Columns game as I remember having the Genesis 6-Pack as a child. It was a fun and simple puzzle game, so I wanted something short and sweet. Also, it being only $10 helped in the process, so I decided to pick it up.

Yeah, it was a pretty big purchase for me, but thankfully a lot of the super expensive games in the US aren't quite up to the same level in PAL territories. So it was a lot, but not too much more than you paid 20 years back actually. I got it without a manual which made the price more reasonable too. I've given the disc a test run to make sure it works and all looks good. The game looks pretty awesome but I need to pick up Suikoden 1 first!

I first played this one a few years back when I played through the games on the Sega Classics Collection on Switch. I've always quite liked the original Columns but Columns III surprised me with just how high quality it was. Really enjoyed my time with it, and I'd love to try the multiplayer with people at some point too. Hope you enjoy it!

Re: Games Acquired 2024

I picked up Ridge Racer V and Skate 2. I am considering trying to collect all the Ridge Racer games, or at least all the main ones. It is a series that kind of intrigues me. I never got into it much when I was younger, as I was far more into Sega's arcade racers growing up. I do have fond memories of the original Ridge Racer though. I bought R4 and Ridge Racer 7 at some point in the last couple of years and I want to slowly pick up more (or all) of them. Rage Racer is the next one I want.

Skate 2 I saw on offer and I remember a few people here recommending the games. I was going to get the first game before the second, but I guess I can always pick it up later if it's worth getting.
