Gamecube, just cuz' I have it. Didn't know I had it and originally bought the NES version.
I enjoy the GCN version quite a bit, feels like a wholly different game. But no auto-fire is a pain - there's no breaks - just mash non-stop for 15 minutes (I could pause it I spose).
I don't have anything downloaded on my Wii and don't have a turbo duo any longer.

Made some progress tonight, but still really struggling to keep my power up on stage 2 toward the end - and once you power down, that boss is just unforgiving if you only have one puny bullet, boss is so much tougher than the NES version, truly not comparable.
I keep feeling like i'm going to have a super run and then I get nicked - such a huge freaking' hitbox and so many powerups bee-lining off the side of the screen. I'm enjoying this, but i'm also hating this. I haven't even complained about the no auto-fire again. So let's do that. No auto sucks.

So, where does the PCE port fall in relation to the NES and arcade versions? The PCE version is the only one I have access to, and I'm inclined to think, based on YouTube videos, that it inhabits a kind of middle ground.

Yes, but closer to the arcade than the NES.marurun wrote:So, where does the PCE port fall in relation to the NES and arcade versions? The PCE version is the only one I have access to, and I'm inclined to think, based on YouTube videos, that it inhabits a kind of middle ground.

I wanted to get a couple more PCE runs in before I left for Japan, but didn't have time.
Anyway, check out this issue Shooting Gameside which features Dragon Spirit!

I'll add a pic later, but on the PCE version I made it to the level 3 boss and scored appx 106000-ish WITHOUT TURBO! I decided to make a couple goes at it without the turbo switches and something about having to think about shooting improved my game. Weird as hell.

Shmupmame 4.2 update is out, and Dragon Spirit is on the new list of games with improved input lag...

Don't know if it'll help anyone get further in the game, but it's worth a try.

Got a bit further in the arcade version. Collecting the small dragon power-up definitely helps in Stage 4...

OK, so here's the picture proof of my earlier score (not a winning score, but no small potatoes).

Back with new scores!
ExedExes - 145,520 - Area 4 - MAME
Area 4 sure is a trip and not like the nice, relaxing NES port at all! Almost made it to the boss!
ExedExes - 136,590 - Area 4 - PCE
It's pretty refreshing to return to this port after getting beat down by the original. I know I can do better here!
