Taking a break from the Megaman rampage to clean out my back loggery a bit. Gundam SEED N.E.T.'s design and gameplay are based off of my all time favorite game on the PS2, Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space. This is definitely an instance where well enough should have been left alone; All of the additions and tweaks made to the game are sloppy and Bandai decided to save money by not licensing any of the original music, leaving the game feeling kind of hollow. In Encounters in Space you actually feel like you ARE Amuro Ray, fighting the entirety of Zeon by yourself. In this game...well, I just wanted to get to the credits so I could say I did.

Oh and as for Jojo's Bizarre Adventure...I have no clue how to play this game, even having beaten the damn thing. Weirdest fighter ever.

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Donkey Kong Jr. e-Reader
Riviera: The Promised Land GBA
Super Mario Bros. 2 Wii *NEW*
King of Fighters R2 NGPC *NEW*
Golden Sun: Dark Dawn DS *NEW*
Total: 5

Super Mario Bros. 2 is now my favourite 2D mario game (yes I'm aware it wasn't originally a Mario game guys, as is the ENTIRE INTERNET, there's no need to remind me every time it's mentioned!). It took me a little while to get used to it, and I had a few mishaps with vine climbing (I just couldnt seem toclimb stright up the damn things without falling), but overall I felt it was just the right length, fun and easy, but not easy enough to be boring. Im currently working through Mario 3, which Im enjoying, but I dont think I like it as much as most do.

King of Fighters R2 is ok, I've made a few of my feelings known in the together retro thread and I'm too lazy to restate them, so I'll sum it up: not as good as Gals Fighters.

Golden Sun Dark Dawn is a tricky one, its certainly the worst of the 3 games, the story is even more meandering than usual and so many plot points have been left open its pretty clear they want to go for a 4th game (they did the same with the first and, to a lesser degree, the second). The game engine doesnt seem to have moved on much either - its the same gameplay as both of the ones before it, for better or worse. The 'playing as the original characters ancestors' was just an excuse for a fresh start, because they barely mention the places and people from previous games, the story only did anything notable about 3/4s through and that was sorted within the last quarter of the game, so the pacing is odd. The difficulty is way too low too, I didnt even need to use summons on the final boss, I just used attack mixed with the odd healing spell.

At the same time, despite all these issues, I did really enjoy the game. The puzzles are still well designed, the characters are charming and the music is great. The gameplay, while simple and easy, didn't particularly wear thin either, which is good considering this is the 3rd game I've played of this. The main issue is basically that they kept the gameplay the same and tried to move the story on more, and thats kinda what people didnt want imo - they wanted to see the characters and lands of the last game, perhaps with a little extra development to the battle system or something. Either way, I liked this enough to want the 4th game if it ever happens.

Anyhow, I'm near the end of the game in both Metroid and Mario 3, so they should be beaten soon too. I'm also close to the end of metal slug 2nd mission, but Im less sure if i'll beat that soon or not.

Gunstar Heroes (Genesis)
The World Ends With You (DS)
GTA: Vice City (Xbox)

This is my first post in this thread, but I believe these are the games I've beaten since January.

I ran through Gunstar Heroes on both easy and medium and it was a real blast. I'm bad at twitch games, so the health bar and infinte continues were a plus.

tWEWY was really cool, but got old after a while. Building up yr pins was fun at first, but I eventually realized I was never gonna "collect 'em all" and but by then I was totally overpowered and breezed through the final few days. Too many options to sort out w.r.t. difficulty and level and drop frequency... But the character/creature designs are great and the story was kinda touching in a way.

I love GTA games. I understand all the complaints, but I still love them. GTA IV was my re-introduction to gaming after sitting out the sixth gen consoles. Vice City was great, can't wait to play III and San Andreas (playing Chinatown Wars right now!).

You can't beat LBP2! With new content uploaded everyday, it'll go on for infinity! Paraphrasing Kevin Butler.

I finished the story mode of the game which is the main part of the game for me. :)

1. Mercs (PS2)
2. Darkstalkers 3 (PS1)
3. House Of The Dead Overkill (Wii)
4. Mega Man 3 (PS2)
5. Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters (PS2)
6. Halo 2600 (Atari 2600)
7. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game (NES)
8. Darkstalkers Chronicles: The Chaos Tower (PSP)

I don't if Darkstalkers is especially easy -- or if I'm just really good at it. But I beat this game on 2 credits on the first time I ever played it. Just like my experience with Darkstalkers 3 earlier this year. I will say this: I think Darkstalkers is one of the absolute best 2D Fighting series out there. I just adore everything about it. The look, the feel, everything. In fact, I've gotten so used to using Morrigan that I don't even think I'd bother using Chun-Li in any of the Capcom Vs. games anymore. I definitely need to hunt down the first two PS1 titles, even if they are sort of part of Chaos Tower, I just love the series so much now that I want them all.

I recently picked up Darkstalkers Chronicles, and I'm really looking forward to playing the hell out of it. As far as getting the PS1 games, I would try and get the Saturn ones if you can. Not sure if you have a Saturn, but as far as I know, the Saturn ports are as close to the arcade versions as you can get. IIRC, the PS1 versions suffer from slowdown and bugs.

Spyro the Dragon (PS1)(Platformer)
Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! (PS1)(Platformer)

Shaq Fu (GEN)(Fighting)
Spyro: Year of the Dragon (PS1)(Platformer)
God of War (PS2)(Action Adventure)
The Simpsons Game (PS2)(Platformer)
The King of Fighters '99 (PS1)(Fighting)

TOTAL: 12

Ok, so while all the folks participating in this month's Together Retro were busy playing KOF '98, I figured I'd give KOF '99 a shot. I'm having a lot of fun, despite being terrible at the game, but I plan to sit down and play a good bit more, so I figure I'll get better. I turned the difficulty down and played through as both the Heroes and Psycho Soldier teams. I think I'll go with the Fatal Fury team next.

'99 is definitely a KOF game, but it incorporates the Striker Match, which is similar to the side partners players could pick in games like Marvel Vs. Capcom. Basically the chosen character jumps out and performs a move that is generally specific to them, such as launch a projectile, rush through, or even grabbing the opponent. In an attempt to keep the player from abusing it, strikers have a limited number of uses per team bout, so you can't over rely on it. In general I preferred using the grab-based folks: Benimaru, Shingo, and Maxima all will grab the enemy and hold them up for a few seconds so you can get in a good, solid hit. I haven't tried 'K yet. Nobody in the Psycho Soldier team appears to have any kind of grab like that, so I found I didn't use the ability as much.

As for graphics and audio, I've read there are dropped frames and shoddier graphics and soundclips on this particular port, especially when compared to stuff like the 3D backgrounds of the Dreamcast port, but the tradeoff is lessened load times...I can put up with the loss of frames for that. Heck, I play SNES fighting games.

So far the game's been entertaining, though generally light on the unlockables. You can view unlocked scenes from the arcade mode's story after beating the game, and you apparently can unlock pieces of artwork for using certain combinations of characters to beat the game. I was also asked to save on Stage 6 at one point and then found I could load the save with whatever team I chose to instantly fight the final boss, albeit with a fight score of 0000...I figure it's a nifty option to allow me to try out fighting Krizalid when I want to.

Unfortunately I lack the proper experience with the KOF series to compare this game to the others. I figure the Striker moves probably weren't that well-received...feels too Capcom, like more of a gimmick than anything else. Like I said earlier, I have my preferences with it, but even then I don't want to use it too much.

Overall, I'm entertained. Good times. I plan to play it a lot more before moving on.
