2 things:
First, I never liked the name Mega Drive. Its so...generic. Genesis is obviously superior.
Second, I hate it when people refer to Genesis as "genny". It makes me want to cry.

Why is that? I always thought it was a cute nickname. What I hate is when people call the Genesis "The Sega". On a side note, the Master System is actually not the correct name for Sega's first major system. There were 2 systems released in the US: The Sega Base System, which was just the console, a controller, and cables, and there was the Sega Master System, which also included the Light Phaser, and I think it had a pack-in game, too. Well, it just doesn't do anything for me. I can't really give a specific reason for it other than it sounds bad to me. Its such a weird contrast. First its epic: Genesis! Alpha! The beginning! Clearly a lot of people like it, which is cool, I don't actually have a problem with it. I just don't like it.
For the record though, I agree with you that "The Sega" is ridiculously annoying. I haven't heard it as often in recent years compared to the old days, so I kinda forgot about it, but it always drove me freakin' nuts.
As for the Master system, I knew there were Base vs. Master packages, but I always thought the system was known as the Master System. I had no idea it was an "adopted" name. Cool.
