Armor Spider wasn't much of an issue for me, but I had a decent bow and the Purple shield.

I didn't have the purple shield when I fought it, but I had a decent bow. I ended up defeating it with arrows and cowering in fear behind a rock outcropping on the right side of the tunnel leading to it every time it targeted me. It felt like a "cheap" victory, but in Demon's Souls, you have to get them any way you can.

IMO, in Souls games, if you're using the tools they give you than it is survival by any means and not cheap. I killed a boss like this in Dark Souls called the Capra Demon, by cowering at the top of the stairs and doing pot shots at him too. :)

I agree completely.

And, to my credit, once I really grasped the mechanics and knew how to approach enemies, I dispatched them in the most flamboyant manner possible. (IMO, the game ends up playing very similarly to Tecmo's Ninja Gaiden Black, and I constructed my DEX build to play as similarly to Ryu Hayabusa as possible.)

So far I'm leaning towards a Strength build, but I need a better shield to make that work.

I wasn't able to figure anything like that for Capra Demon, but in general, I actually really like those loopholes some enemies have in the games. If I recall right, the Purple Shield can be had from one of the "don't fight this yet" enemies early on, which you can make path down a pit (which is how I got it last I played Demon's Souls). There's a black knight early on in Dark Souls that you can do the same thing to.

What really made the Capra Demon a dick was his pair of wolves in a 12x12 room. If you didn't pull off the opening just right you were taking a giant axe to the face.

The purple shield in Demon's Souls does not require you to kill anything you're not supposed to.

It just require you to be killed by dragon fire.

(It is totally worth it if you have a strength build, BTW.)

Well, not per se, no, they're just far more difficult than other stuff. Enough that the pathing strategy is even listed on the wiki.

It's not the only option to get the item either, of course. Point was more that I enjoy having those kinds of strategies available.
