The asassination of jesse james.

It was great. Cinematography, especially on the train robbery towards the beginning, was amazing. Movie was too long though.

Scott Pilgrim at last!

It was actually hard to watch this movie around here. After it was released with absolutedly no marketing (meaning that nobody even knew that the film existed ) it dissapeared from most cinemas in a week. As a matter of fact, today at 12 was the last sesion for this movie in my local cineplex and there will be no more sessions in any other cinema next weekend.

It makes sense: They saw that the movie didn't make money in the US, it was competing against Harry Potter that had 4 screenings running at the same time, the movie had a niche audience in the first place and they never bothered to market it, to tell people "hey, our movie exists".

There were 4 people in the threater counting my friend and me. Fortunatedly the dubbing was not bad and the movie itself was very enjoyable. However the film had a couple of "cigarrete stains"! How come? It's a new film it shouldn't have any defects!

As I said the film itself was very fun I had a great time and laughed quite a bit. I think that cutting out Scott's past, specially with Kim, was a very neccessary move but leaves a lot of the character's motivation and character development to be desired. I'm biased because Kim is probably my favourite character.

I didn't expect the directing to be so good, I enjoyed it.

Akira: Beautiful animation, interesting story, terrible explanation of evolution, and all-in-all, a really great movie.

While I do love Akira Kurosawa's samurai films, my favorite of his is actually Ikiru, which may surprise some folks here as it doesn't feature Toshiro Mifune at all. Instead Takashi Shimura, another of Kurosawa's staple actors, takes the lead in a performance I found both depressing and uplifting.

Fist of Legend - Jet Li's remake of Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury is action-packed and entertaining, featuring some of Jet Li's best work in a more "realistic" martial arts movie, as opposed to wirework kung fu films. Yuen Woo-ping's choreography is dynamite, making for a thrilling ride, while the plot set during the Second Sino-Japanese War confronts racism between the Chinese and Japanese. Still, it's odd seeing Jet Li move and talk like Bruce Lee, and it changes some of the character of the film: what starts as an amazing Jet Li as Chen Zhen film soon becomes Jet Li as Bruce Lee as Chen Zhen film.

Now I'm interested in seeing how Donnie Yen handles the character in the new Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen, as I've never seen Yen's television show with the character.

Jeremiah Johnson - Robert Redford excels in this relatively quiet Western in which Jeremiah Johnson strives to become a mountain man in the Rocky Mountains. The first half of the film follows Johnson as he learns the lifestyle, dealing with other mountain men and nearby Indian tribes. Johnson accidentally ends up with an adopted son after wandering across a woman mad in the aftermath of an Indian attack and marries a Christian Indian girl, again on accident after giving a large group of horses to a chief. The second half changes things dramatically, as Johnson fends off Crow tribe assassin after assassin for having offended them. During this time his trip comes full circle, as he meets the various individuals who he encountered on his path to become what he is. I greatly enjoyed the film, save for a recurring folk song about Johnson that I felt was a bit corny when it first began.

Moon - I had thought this science fiction film starring Sam Rockwell was going to be a horror film. It's not, but what I got instead was an interesting portrayal of a man who has been violated in an unusual way and is intentionally kept ignorant of his situation until an accident occurs which changes everything he knows. I won't say what that situation is, instead preferring you go watch the film (seriously, I feel it's one of the better science fiction films to be made in recent years). Just know that Rockwell gives a great performance that Empire magazine considered vastly underrated.

I watched District 9. Really enjoyed it. The whole documentary sort of vibe reminds me a bit of Children of Men. Overall a really well done sci fi picture

Now I'm gonna sit down and watch Batman/Superman Public Enemies

Superman/Batman: Public Enemies was a lot of fun, but a bit silly at times. I'm amazed at how less and less effective kryptonite was against Superman as the movie went on. That's one of the problems with Supes in these movies, there truly doesn't seem to be ANYTHING that can really hurt him or kill him(same goes for Supergirl/Power Girl). So there's never any sense of real danger or stakes when he's in a fight. I guess that's why I'm not a big Superman fan. Batman is mortal and has to really stay two steps ahead of his opponents at all times. Superman just lets you beat on him until he finally gets bored or pissed and then kicks your ass

Anyway, there's the usual great action that I've come to expect from these DC animated movies. There's probably no other one that makes Supes and Batman look as badass as they do in this one though. The movie is basically Superman/Batman versus EVERYONE. Some great banter between the two of them too, and some really, really funny comedy towards the end of the movie (at Power Girl's expense)

Without spoiling anything, there's a great bit that goes something like this:

"Will this work?"

"Will it work!? Does Power Girl have big""

"Ok fine, we get it"

In the realm of remakes, the NOES remake is pure gold. But that's not saying alot, though JEH was really gr8 as Freddy, much darker than the eventual pun-spouting Freddy of later, but still good, NOES films.

The original NOES is boss.

And part 2 sucks in a big way. Just make a beeline for part 3, which really established the expanded rules of the dream realm, which was further expanded in part 4 and part 5 (albeit minorly).

And while tempting, hold off on New Nightmare until after Freddy's Dead.

I just watched Graveyard of Honor again last night. I love that movie.

If you like your Yakuza movies bloody and borderline artsy (of if you're a Miike fan), give it a viewing.
It is finally available on Netflix streaming. They don't have the original 1975 movie, though.
