Did they ever make a comfortable/better original Xbox controller?

Wow, all this time, I didn't realize Bogus was really Shamu. Because seriously, those controllers were made for whales.BogusMeatFactory wrote:Yeah Playstation controllers are super uncomfortable to me, but that is because I find the WiiU Gamepad and the Original Xbox hamburger pad to be the most comfortable controllers ever, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. Make your own informed decisions about crappy controller design with this retrospective, coincidentally timed for this discussion.

I also can't stand Playstation controllers, except for the PS4. Too bad I'm only using it for PS3 and PC games.
Sonic Adventure 1 is better than Adventure 2.
There are only three Soul Calibur games. Oddly enough, the third one was called Soul Calibur IV.
I don't like Mario Sunshine or Banjo Kazooie. The environments were too large, and it felt tedious navigating them.
The Dreamcast is the greatest game system ever, with the Gamecube as a close second. Shame about that controller though.
Half-Life is decent, but it's nowhere near the best FPS ever. It's not even the best FPS of 1998. That would be Unreal.
Goldeneye is the best N64 game.

Dreamcast controller is amazing. On a side note, so is the CD32 controller (both are very similar to the SNES pads - which is the best controller of all time).
The original Xbox controller is unwieldy and awkward. And I believe I have one of the redesigned "better" controllers. The 360 controller is sublime though.
PlayStation controllers have always been crappy. They're too small and light. The stick placement is awful. They're okay for RPGs (and that's essentially all I play on 5th+ gen consoles) but I wouldn't want to use one for much else.
As a kid I was actually enraged because I felt like Sony totally ripped off the controller design of my precious SNES. Those motherfuckers.

The Playstation controller design is great. The Gamecube controller is shit. The C-stick sucks, the D-pad is pathetic, the oversized A button detracts from the B button, the bumpers feel awful, and the large ridges keep me from easily reaching the Z button. In short, it fails on pretty much every level.
Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
The original four sonic games were just speed games to me, very little to explore unless you were after those hidden gems, and the controls just felt clunky if he wasn't up to speed as that's when the game just flowed well. I'm picking on the 3D games for being badly made not because of the transition, I think the original Sonic Advance at points did it fine, but the colossal amount of damning bugs I found that increased between SA1, SA2, and 3(Heroes) which swore me off those and then the buggy mess on the Rings game for Wii with the waggle only jumping really screwed the pooch on what could have been good. Those games I found plenty of places to fall into holes in supposedly solid walls, calling through Chaos in the final fight to keep dying because of bugs, and other screwy things that should have been fixed in test. I agree with your dart board type design between Shadow's game, werewolf Sonic and other junk.BogusMeatFactory wrote: Can you take a second and restate what you said, because I am having a hard time understanding. You say that the problem is that they were 2D back in the 90's and were meant as speed games? They weren't. They may have been advertised as such, but there was a lot of exploration and secrets and a ton of platforming. The problem with the 3D games is not that they are poorly made, but because it is really difficult to translate Sonic the Hedgehog's core game mechanics into a 3D space. They succeeded in some places and failed miserably in others. They seemed to be more of the mentality of throw anything on the board and see what sticks.
I don't know how you can say Alex Kidd is better. Ice level controls and boss fights that are pure luck. Not fun at all. But, you are entitled to your opinion.
I'm not saying that Alex Kidd is better, I'm just saying it wasn't any worse is all other than those crappy rock paper scissors boss fights in the first.
Irixith- I'm glad you wrote that because otherwise myself or someone else would have to because Sunshine is fairly subpar as far as a Mario game goes and kind of just in general with 3D platformers. It's no wonder people ask for Mario64 or Mario Galaxy1/2 HD remakes and not that one. I don't agree with hating on the Gamecube controller because despite the weird shaped buttons it was comfy and worked better than the 64 one ever did yet it did blow not having a larger d-pad and missing an added top 2nd L button. I also agree with you Nintendo FINALLY nailed 3D Zelda with Wind Waker (and haven't since) and same with Galaxy 2 not that the original was much lesser.
I'm also in the camp that the PS3/4 controllers are far superior to the wonky aligned sticks and setup of the XBOX and Nintendo 'Pro Controller' layout. Not a fan of having the sticks all over or the way they're setup either. The xbox pad which I use on PC is still an annoyance since they reversed the lettering Nintendo used I've got pounded into my head since 1991.
