What Anime are you Currently Watching?/Anime Recommendations
Re: What Anime are you Currently Watching?/Anime Recommendat
I think there's also an element for me that I'm also more annoyed by the inherent sexism and fan-service. If the show is great I can look past it, but it's frustrating how prevalent those issues are in almost every single anime. I don't think it would bother me so much if there were at least a few exceptions to those rules.

I think more good anime is being made today but the problem is that it's really rare to see those big ones that really hit you these days. We don't see masterpieces like Ghost In The Shell and Evangelion anymore but there's plenty of entertaining shows out there and occasional hard hitters like this years Koe No Katachi (flawed but still really good)

We need an unpopular opinions on anime thread so I can rant about how much Evangelion annoys me.

Eh, Evangelion has always been a polarizing series, far as I've seen.marurun wrote:We need an unpopular opinions on anime thread so I can rant about how much Evangelion annoys me.

I've been enjoying Rebuild more than the original series. The compressed events means less Shinji angst, and then he keeps getting the shit kicked out of him for making poor choices.marurun wrote:We need an unpopular opinions on anime thread so I can rant about how much Evangelion annoys me.

Shinji's is just the beginning of the series's problems. In fact, my major problem with the series is that it fakes depth. It give you these hints and tantalizing sounding references but the creator clearly didn't actually have that solid an idea of what's under the water. The series is just the tip of an iceberg that is... well, all tip. There is no depth. It's all a lie. The cake is a lie. It's like Lost but worse.

I'm not going to say that people who hate Shinji haven't been depressed because everyone gets depressed at times but if you haven't ever been cripplingly depressed it's probably lot harder to understand him. I was at real lowpoint when I watched evangelion so it was really easy to relate with his struggles and it really shows in him that Anno (director) has gone through shit because you couldn't write him that well otherwise.

I'm using phone so sorry for double post. Personally I see evangelion as a character piece and the big plot doesn't really matter to me much. The characters do have a lot of depth and that makes the show.marurun wrote:Shinji's is just the beginning of the series's problems. In fact, my major problem with the series is that it fakes depth. For the first two films, I'd agree. The third was basically fanservice-y nonsense bookending a horribly paced center. It was like an A-HAH! to those of us who thought the movies were going to take the opportunity to make a cohesive whole.MrPopo wrote: I've been enjoying Rebuild more than the original series. Otherwise, yeah, Evangelion the original show was a lot more a character drama (they're all flawed people). Then it goes way off the rails and just turns into art film - albeit more accessible art film than most. Objectively, yeah, it's a mess, but a very influential mess if you happened to have watched it at the right point in your life or anime viewing history. Personally, I did, so I like it on the whole.
