Even though it is a remake it's still a Tim Burton original, which I like. I'm hoping Timmy does a lot more original work and strays from remakes of classics.

The new Frankenweenie is hands-down my favorite Tim Burton movie that he's made since I finished high school. It's also my favorite of his stop-motion films. Neither of these statements are really saying much but I'm still glad to see him doing something that isn't a waste of time to watch.

Did I post my thoughts on Paranormal Activity in this thread? I don't remember. I saw the first one for the first time a couple weeks ago. I thought it was pretty uninteresting, with dumb scares and unlikable characters. Even if the second and third ones are better, I don't see myself bothering with them any time soon.

Anyone who likes FRANKENWEENIE should definitely see PARANORMAN. It's been a great year for horror comedies, and although HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA is inferior to the others I mentioned, it still is a pretty darned good movie.

This reminds me; I need to pick up MONSTER HOUSE on Blu Ray. That movie is a fun ride.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors

I am not sure why noise thought I'd like this one best - I didn't. It is, in fact, probably my least favorite so far. It had some interesting effects work and well directed scenes as always, but like the first film this one seemed to lack the humor that the second film acknowledged. NOES 3 actually feels much more like an action film than a horror film...

I think that the NOES series probably boils down to me thus: the entire series is based on such a ridiculous and inconsistently portrayed premise and relies so heavily on genre tropes that the strength of any single film rests largely in the ability to provide A) gory, clever, and/or "fun to watch" kills and B) a mostly-obvious acknowledgement of the genre-parodying/ self-parodying nature of the whole thing. NOES 2 did both well, but NOES 1 and NOES 3 really only did the first well. I KNOW that Craven gets to this place with Scream, which - unlike the Freddy films - was/is much more original and interesting than the NOES series.

To put it another way, I found most of Craven's pre-NOES films (especially Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes) to be genuinely disturbing and to hold up well today), and I find the Scream films to be some of the most compelling examples of post-modern film-making in any genre (and I still need to see Scream 4!)...but I find the NOES films to sit uncomfortably at a place in between. I always try to appreciate films in the context of their release, and maybe the NOES films were more compelling in their time and I am missing something, but I just don't see it...

This morning I plan to watch Silent Hill, go grab some lunch, watch a 12:30 showing of Silent Hill 2, and then after taking my son Trick-R-Treating watch Cabin in the Woods late tonight. It should be a hell of a way to finish the month, and I am pretty happy with the dent I've made in my horror film backlog. I'll post more thoughts later...

Happy Halloween!

he was involved in 3 pretty substantially though, right? Writing and producing are pretty important, and the writing is largely where I get hung up...

Yeah he wrote 3... Was just making sure u realized. At any rate I feel you might be trying too hard to come up with reasons for not liking the series. To say a rather prominent genre series is at fault for using genre cliches... Or a slasher series at fault for relying on elaborate gore scenes seems ... "wrong" .

I just think the series itself just isn't for you. Paul Simons Graceland may be a classic but it never hit my ears right. Theres lots of film series that many folks live (harry potter, star wars, james bond) that I don't like. I'm not going to try to come up with reasons like "star wars relies too heavily on sci fi conventions"... Its just the films aren't MY thing.

Edit.. I think not liking the story is valid mind you. But that means you won't like any of them and still should have nothing to do with a genre films use of genre conventions.

I want to like it, I really do. And on a certain level I enjoy the well executed cliches and well done effects/gore, but when that's ALL they bring to the table I can't rank the films much higher than a 2/5 or 3/5 so far. That isn't to say they are bad, but there's lots of other films in the same genre that I'd be compelled to give 3/5 or 4/5 to. Slasher films like Halloween, Psycho, or TCM are closer to 5/5 territory, obviously.

The difference is that you don't like the sci-fi/fantasy/spy film genres at all, so it isn't really a fair comparison. I quite enjoy the horror genre and would probably consider it my favorite, but this series just isn't doing it for me.

So I assume you are going to watch 1930s Maniac today and hold up your end of the bargain?

Although I've seen both movies dozens of times, I've never seen them on the big screen. Holy cow what a difference it makes.

BEETLEJUICE

Timeless. Perfect. Movie Gold.

I could spend an entire day in the theater watching this over, and over, and over. It's tongue in cheek, it's whimsical, it's satire, it's horror, it's comedy, and again it's perfect. My wife and I totally need to dress like the Maitlands next Halloween.

A couple of things I never noticed: Danny Elfman, not surprisingly , reuses the exact same music from the "bike surgery" scene in Pee-Wee's big adventure. Maybe I never caught it before, maybe because of the size of the screen, but the Maitland home is astronomically HUGE. There's an over head shot (not miniatures) of the house next to a large church, and the house dwarfs the church. Look for that shot next time you watch BEETLEJUICE.

The effects have aged so well. Some are a tad corny, but hilarious and frightening at the same time. Just thinking about this guy makes me laugh out loud:

and then there we watched:

THE WORST WITCH

Oh boy. If you love awesomely bad movies, look no further. This makes TEEN WITCH seem like THE GODFATHER in terms of production and quality. Need I say more?

Agreed. Bettlejuice is tied with Edward Scissorhands as my favorite Tim Burton film, and the waiting room in that movie is priceless.

DSH - I thinkt we mentioned it earlier in the thread, but you should check out We Craven's New Nightmare. It kind of falls apart at the end, but I think that you would like it much better than any of the other NOES movies. (I did.)

Finally, a recently noticed that a local pawn shop has two four-movie DVD packs that contain NOES 1-4 and NOES 5-8, respectively. (Freddy v. Jason is apparently NOES 8...) They probably only cost a couple dollars each, and I know that there are a lot of NOES fans on here. Accordingly, if anyone is interested in acquiring physical copies of those movies, send me a PM.
