You can't level up until you beat Phalanx.
World tendency is expressed through the color of the plinth on the map screen or whatever screen it is. It will be obviously white or black if you're firmly in that direction. World tendency is affected by dying as a human, killing a specific one-time spawn in certain areas, beating bosses, and I think killing certain NPCs.

Re: Demon's Souls
And becoming human? Is that after the first boss as well?
Also, when I upgrade weapons at the blacksmith? Does it use a material to do that? Or just souls?

Re: Demon's Souls
Upgrading requires materials. A lot of specific materials for the various kinds. There's two different ones for upgrading basic weapons (edged vs. blunt weapons), then different ones for all the elemental imbues (which you don't unlock until you find a special item).
You become human after beating a boss or using a limited amount item (like Human Effigies).

WT is also simply effected by playing online. It will subtly shift closer to whatever the average is, usually like PW+1 or somewhere a little above neutral. This can be troublesome if you're going for the Platinum as there are specific events you'll need to do at pure white and pure black at some point in multiple playthroughs, so that one little shift can completely mess up your playthrough haha. So you basically have to play offline for a platinum.
It's gimmicky and weird slightly broken crap anyways, but it's easy to ignore if you're just doing a casual playthrough.
Stone of Ephemeral Eyes are the human restoring items in this one.
There is a secondary blacksmith in 2-1 whom is the one you'd take boss souls and other stuff to. It's not very obvious at all or ever mentioned, but he does upgrade a few different things than the guy in the Nexus.
Also don't forget to repair your equipment and use Stockpile Thomas for junk (there is the usual equip load but also item load that can encumber you, so you can't run around with an infinite inventory like the other games). The armor repairing in this and Dark 1 is so lame haha, glad they changed that up with the sequels. It's not like you'll ever scrape for souls to repair anything, but it's just random micromanagement to pay attention to.

So ... is it the same with equip load under a certain amount changes your roll speed?
Beat Phalanx in 1-1, set him on fire, which made this a cinch. Pretty obvious tactic if you've dealt with any slimes in other Souls games, physical resistance is high, but torch 'em and they ain't happy.
Went back to the Nexus and spoke with The Monumental, I'm really digging the story so far, the overall vibe is just excellent. Leveled up a ton and threw most of it in to STR so I could wield the Bastard Sword, liking that guy. Also I like the Maiden in Black, she is just creepy and cool. On to 1-2, wish me luck!

Re: Demon's Souls
From what I see with a quick search, Demon's Souls is much the same as Dark Souls for movement/roll, except that it's just full speed under 50%, and fat roll at/over 50%, instead of having the faster one under 25%.

Oof, under 50%? I might have to fat roll it.
Also, Tower Knight = ouch.

Re: Demon's Souls
So you could do something besides the Tower Knight now that you've beaten 1-1, and you can't do 1-3 until you've finished everything else anyway. The speed run from SGDQ this year didn't do 1-2 until the end.

Yeah ... I went to 2-1 (it is the Burrowing King) and it seemed do-able so far.

Wait until you get to the boss! The Armor Spider makes the Tower Knight look like a push-over (which he is once you figure out how to beat him).
Also, and IMO, the hardest bosses in the game are the 2-1 and 2-2 bosses. (The 3-2 boss is nothing to laugh at either, though.) The 3-1 boss is pretty easy, and if you are having trouble with the Tower Knight, you may want to go after her. (The 4-1, 4-2, 5-1, and 5-2 bosses aren't bad either...but the areas leading up to them can be very challenging.)
