Back in 2006 I poured a can of Seafoam in a Geo Metro I was putting along in. The Geo Metro never ran again. I'm convinced the stuff dissolved gaskets inside the engine.

I then held a sledgehammer over the mower, and told it if it didn't start, I was going to gleefully pulverize it into a pile of scrap metal. Then I pulled the start cord, and the damn thing started right up.

I think the Japanese might be onto something with the whole tsukumogami thing.

Ticked: Mower started, so I had to mow the lawn.
I'm currently in love with Sea Foam Motor Treatment cleaning products. Jeep engine developed a knock in the engine and half a can of this in the oil got rid of the knock and all hesitation during acceleration so it's running like new even with 140K miles on it. This stuff has a shit load of uses as well.

Basically you put it in the oil 200-300 miles before a change and then you can put it in right after for extra clean and just monitor the oil color. I'm planning to do it once every 4-5 oil changes. I also did the air intake spray clean on my Dad's Jeep and it cleaned it up pretty well. That stuff does put out a shitload of smoke as it gets the carbon out though. I want to do it on mine but I have to get the track arm swapped out first so I can really push the engine to get the maximum effect out of the cleaning still getting a speed shimmy at 65mph. track arm is pretty straight forward with just two bolts holding it on but I want to use my dads car lift for the install so I'm waiting for my next work break which is Thursday.

Back in the 70s, an aerosol can of ether worked great for sluggish starts in icy weather. Crazy stuff would sometimes flame up the throat of the carburetor. I am not keen on any additives today dumped in the fuel tank, too much a risk of failing smog. The test computer on newer cars read history and not a just a current sniff test.

Yeah there's a strong part of me that never wants to put any additives in my vehicles. Including lucas and all the other bullshit that isn't endorsed by anybody. But in this case the problem was under warrenty so I tried the seafoam. I've heard of some bad issues from doing the seafoam treatment though.

I feel your pain on the mowers. I have a 25 year old murray riding mower that starts every time during the season. First start of the season, the gd carburetor has to be adjusted and it pisses me the fuck off.

I'm right there with you. Last year I ran some Techron Concentrate Plus through my car and I'm pretty sure it fried the oxygen sensor. (Had to replace it shortly after.)

Did you put it in the oil, gas, or air intake? Also did you use a full can because most applications only use half a can unless you use the aerosol which uses a full can. There are pretty specific instructions on the back and it seems like as long as you follow them it's pretty safe. The company has been around since the 30s or 40s.

I did this:

I'm sure the stuff is safe for most engines. But whatever it uses to "liquefy petroleum residues" apparently liquefied the gaskets in that Metro's engine.

The Metro was a cheap car and probably used cheap parts. And older cars with degraded seals are more susceptible to problems. Sometimes the gunk is all that's holding things together.
