I've been sight reading and "playing by ear" before the term "tween" existed. It's not odd at all for someone to be incredible at sight reading. My Mother or late Grandfather could play this at first sight without missing a step. I have my Grandfather playing piano on dvd, which I need to convert to a file that I can place on YouTube, as the guy was incredible.

On first sight, I bet dollars to donuts I could play this, but not with the chords. Just a simplified version that would be no where near as impressive as what this cat did. But I love the way this guy plays. He notices the chords, key changes before he plays, and once the cadence kicks in, his fingers are so on it. Really awesome video, especially since you can tell the pianist really enjoys the tune.

I strongly disagree, but it all depends on training and ear, so it is subjective. If anything, my classical training has helped play by ear by being able to define notes, pitch, and intonation, but I know plenty of people who have no training whatsoever who can play by ear.

I love how he crouches over the keys when he gets to the hard parts haha.

I also like the sound of the theme on a piano quite a lot.

What version are you playing? I've been eyeing the N64 version for a while.
The PS1 version, I'm not sure what the differences are though. I realized it's actually not all that great after I sobered up, but it was an awesome nostalgia trip. I wonder if the second one is any good...

My parents tried to get me to learn piano when I was 9 or so; I hated it and didn't try, and they didn't make me try because neither of them could play either. When I took music theory last year, I only managed to get a C with effort. I'm not gonna be sight-reading music anytime soon.

Though I've played piano since I was five, so that may have something to do with it. :P

Yeah, I have regrets. I put the piano down in favor of other instruments for a number of years. I wish I stayed up with it. But I mainly compare piano to other instruments, which makes it seem impossibly hard by comparison. I've practiced sight reading with a trumpet for NYSMA, which seems like no big deal at all compared to sight reading piano music. One note at a time? After looking at piano music, what's so hard about that?

I do have perfect pitch, so I'm okay at doing it. Maybe it's just been my years of staring at sheet music that has trained it.

I played trumpet in grade school myself, lol. I was pretty good at it but just wanted to play videogames or hang out with friends after school, not spend 30 minutes a day practicing trumpet! So I never continued.

I played Clarinet and Saxophone, but I wasn't amazing at either. I wasn't bad either. I had the same problem where I just didn't practice enough.

I don't wanna sound like a douche, but I rarely practiced trumpet at home and I was pretty good at it. In fact, I was always the best in my class right up until a huge ass hole took over the music department and I dropped band. The only downside with trumpet is that if you don't practice then your lips hurt after a few minutes of playing. You need to build up lip muscles lol. Though I never practiced anything from school at home, like studying for tests.
