It'll be the next RPG I play, but I need a short break from RPGs. I'll probably fire up Dead Rising 4 this weekend since I haven't played it yet and hit Chrono Trigger either next week or after Christmas.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Tales of Phantasia is boss.

You have to understand, Bone, that we mortals don't have the stamina that you gods posses. It's an inherent failing of our flawed species.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I dunno what this means.ElkinFencer10 wrote:I need a short break from RPGs

Might as well talk a little bit about Crime Fighters and Vendetta. They're both brawlers in the same series. I've always had some fascination for the former, since it was one of the cabinets in the closest Walmart when I was growing up. It looked fun, but ridiculously unfair, mainly because of the demo sequence that showed all the bosses ganging up on the protagonist. And at the end of the game, you do get to fight in that sequence. Hoo boy! Thankfully it's an optional deal, it still counts as beaten even if you can't get through it. In the US version, it's actually not possible as far as I know to 1CC the game and beat the bosses.
Anyway, it's closer to Double Dragon, but the moveset is less varied. You're mostly going to be relying on your punches since they're faster, a pretty awkward jumping kick that pretty much exists to get an enemy prone, and kickin' enemies while they're down. Honestly, even with some hit detection issues, I like the feel of the game, but I have to admit it's a bit of a slog. It's a long game, with eight levels, and you have to fight a lot of goons that take a lot of hits.
The sequel is improved in a lot of ways. It looks nicer, the hit detection is a bit better, and the engine feels a little more like the TMNT engine with some Double Dragon on top. I won't say it's a classic, but it was a reasonable time.
One thing I noticed is that Crime Fighters definitely had some tunes that sounded like they came from TMNT, so I'm thinking they may have had the same composer. (Yep.)
It's actually got a very cool soundtrack.

I find the arcade controls to also be a little unreliable at times. Even though the NES game is very different, the controls seem to respond better, IMO.Sarge wrote:I like the first Double Dragon better in the arcade, although the NES version is fantastic (if you don't care about co-op). There's a caveat to that, though: play the bootleg version without all the slowdown.
The NES version and PCE version are both super awesome. They are similar, though they feel a little different. The PCE version almost feels little more like the arcade, but not so much that it loses that quick response time the NES version has.Double Dragon II is probably the absolute best in the series. The game used to really creep me out, actually. Between the color choices and the music, some of those stages really have a disturbing vibe. That temple stage... plus the nerve-wracking jumps you have to make over spike pits just puts it over the top. I absolutely love the cyclone kick / hyper uppercut moves. I tend to use them more than the hyper knee, even if it's more powerful, since I can pull them much more consistently.
The arcade version is a hot mess. Using quarters to buy powerups is almost like an early version of In App Purchases, only in the arcade instead of on your phone. The NES version, though, feels like the most polished set of Double Dragon moves around.I like Double Dragon III as well, and it's a whole lot better than the arcade version or the other ports all over the place. It's just so freaking hard! I really have to put together a nice run, and exploit the AI quite a bit to even have a chance at the end. You really have to save Billy for that last fight, because the Cyclone Kick is invaluable.
I want this one, also. I played it a lot with friends back in the day. My only complaint about it is that, despite having a bigger move set, it doesn't feel any more action-y than the older ones. I actually think it feels slower and more cumbersome than DD3.Oh, right, and Super Double Dragon. I'd love to get a copy of that some day. I'd probably rather have the Japanese version, which was given a little more time to be finished up.

There's Poop in My Soup is a great game of scatological joy, perfect for coming home and playing after a bad day at work, after a fun night at the bar, or with the right group of friends. I did everything on my "to-poo lists" in NY, Paris, and Beijing and so this one can go up on the list.
Storm Island is a piece of FH2's DLC that I've been slowly working away at for a few months and had intended to finish playing before Forza Horizon 3. Now I'd rather play that, but forced myself to go back to this first. It is more of the main game, which was my third favorite game of 2014. Fun stuff.
Titanfall 2 joins Doom 4 as amongst the best FPS experiences I have had - not just this year...but ever. In terms of raw action, spectacle, and sheer enjoyment - Titanfall 2 is really something special. I played the hell out of the first game, and am pleased that the campaign in this one does that memory proud. I can't wait to dive into the multiplayer. The game is gorgeous as hell, too.
Battlefield 4's campaign I have played on and off a bit over the past few months. I don't really care for it, but sniping may way through the bad AI is ok, and the game does really seem to get the weight and feel of the various guns down very well - if little else. It was better than Battlefield 3, but I'll have to continue to long for another entry in the Bad Company series.
I started a thread about Super Mario Run over here. It is really something special, and a good GOTY candidate in its own right.

Re: Games Beaten 2016
I didn't end up liking the Duo version of Revenge very much, honestly. The NES version is where it's at! I think it's how a lot of the moves work. I may just have the mechanics of the NES version so ingrained that it's hard for me to adjust to the changes.
The slow speed doesn't bother me that much. In fact, I think I much prefer a measured pace with diverse movesets than I do the sort of Final Fight-style speed-but-no-depth gameplay. Of course, even that series got deeper as it progressed, with Final Fight 3 practically being a secret Streets of Rage game.
dsh, glad you enjoyed Titanfall 2 as well! I'm not even a big FPS fan, and I enjoyed it quite a lot. I just wish there were more in the campaign!

It's hilarious how I grabbed both BF1 and TF2 on a Target sale when they released and was initially more excited about BF1.
...I still haven't touched BF1.
