I'm going to show them on YouTube the gba games if they want to go original I'll show them the red and blue onesTanooki wrote:Handheld on the whole isn't up, it's very low compared to the consoles, but Pokemon never really faltered as the fanbase of 20 years just won't die.
Expect to probably pay around $20 for a second hand loose pokemon game with a working save on it.
If you're starting out you're right the red/blue experience is best, but I'd go with the refined GBA release FireRed/LeafGreen just so you get a smoother experience with the classic content. Also it saves to the chip w/no battery involved, never worry about loss. If you must go old, get Yellow, follows the 1st year of the cartoon very well, the only game where you get to curb stomp TV's Team Rocket.

Good plan. I'd just solder in new batteries if you go the old route. Or if you're daring I know some people pry the save chip and battery out and re-solder in a new FRAM chip in there making the battery irrelevant.

Well that saves me money. My kids just want to play pokemon go. Plus my son has the pokemon yellow game and I totally forgot about it.Tanooki wrote:Good plan. Except for the gba sp, does anyone ever pull out the original brick or pocket or color to play their original or color Gameboy games? Even though I like the gba sp, I really like and feel of the color and original brick. Its very comfortable for my hands.

I pull out the original model when I want to play tetris, other than that no I use the sp. Having a light up screen and less motion blur are just too good.mas wrote:Well that saves me money. Maybe I'm just getting too old, but I really don't see how I use to play pokemon, metroid 2, and super mario land all day on the brick gameboy.

I played Pokemon and the like on a Game Boy Color, and as much as I love, and still love, that machine, I could never go back after playing them on my Advance SP.strangenova wrote:Maybe I'm just getting too old, but I really don't see how I use to play pokemon, metroid 2, and super mario land all day on the brick gameboy.
I tried once.
It didn't last long.

Good day picking up games today. A flea market I go to had 2 huge tubs full of GB and GBA games. I dug for as long as I could and got (notably) Max Payne and Sigma Star Saga. The former has good reviews and the latter is a shmup/RPG hybrid so I couldn't go wrong with those.

I just like the fact I have that choice to play on the older consoles.Michi wrote:I played Pokemon and the like on a Game Boy Color, and as much as I love, and still love, that machine, I could never go back after playing them on my Advance SP.strangenova wrote:Maybe I'm just getting too old, but I really don't see how I use to play pokemon, metroid 2, and super mario land all day on the brick gameboy.

Fun thing last week. I brought the brick to my work and 3 people played Mario land 2 during their lunch

I can still play on an old Gameboy. I have to be in the mood for it, but it's not a problem. Sure the original one can blur a bit, but the screen isn't awful otherwise beyond the greenish tint to it. The Pocket kind of fixes much of that up, and the Color as long as you got a worm light or a semi-decent light source it's ok. I mean I get not going into it, it's not front or backlit, but they're not awful. I keep the lot of them in my desk drawer if the mood hits.
Re: Nintendo Handheld Gaming Thread (Game Boy to DS)
Oh no, the Color and Original are totally still playable. It's just I usually end up playing in the evenings as a way to relax, so low light is a must if I plan on winding down and getting any sleep that night.
Now if I'm lucky enough to have time to play during the day, then hell, I'll grab whatever's handy.

This thread reminded me that I need to replace all of the batteries in the GBA Pokemon games so that I can take advantage of time based events.
While the save data is retained, certain things stop working. Berry growth, department store sales (after elite four), and the Shoal Cave tides are all time based events. There are others but those are what I can remember.
