You make a good explanation , but I thought games will always have that constant "yelling" back and forth for every action and reaction some one takes on an online game. How would some one fix lag then, if not by higher speeds? I always imagined that lower speeds meant harder time to fetch data causing the lag.
You are confusing Ping with Bandwidth. Ping is how fast your "yell" would get to the other person and is dependent on distance, bandwidth would be how much "water" your hose could move per second. With online games, bandwidth is not as big of an issue as Ping is, since its mostly small packets of data being sent back and forth.
Right. Distance is always going to affect lag no matter what. It can be better or worse depending on how many stops it makes along the way. If I yell across a field at you, there will be some lag due to the speed of sound and the distance across the field that in unavoidable. If there are 5 people spread across the field and I tell the closest person I have a message for you and give it to them, then they tell the next person and so on, that creates more lag relaying the message across the field. But for instance it might be necessary to relay it this way because of distance or maybe it is a loud windy day.
This is why MMOs have multiple servers in different countries. There are multiple copies of the world to spread people around, but even within that, the maps are broken into regions so that the game can hopefully just send you location information of 100 or less other players. This requires more bandwidth than an old 56K can provide, but the up to the second accuracy of the location information will still be terrible if there's lag. This is why large central towns in MMOs can often appear laggy with you or other players teleporting around if there's a problem or simply too many people close by. It is also why you want to pick the server closest to you unless you really want to try and play with an international friend.
Is there a documentary where online gameplay is covered and how it is managed through servers?
Something like they actually show you the server farm, and how big a WoW server is.

Something that we likely could've seen on TechTV if it were still around.

As bad as G4 was, at least it is going to die gracefully, it was gonna be that new Esquire network, but that went over to the Style network instead. Instead, G4 is gonna be leaving for good October 10. It's already been pulled off the cable system here.

Psssh. They already pulled the plug like 2 years ago when they stopped making new episodes of X-Play, Attack of the Show, Cheats, and their other original programming. The only thing on that network that actually resembles G4 at all anymore is the logo in the bottom corner.

Yah I know. It gave up being gamer long ago. I liked Ninja Warrior and Ultimate Banzuke though. 24hrs of Cops, Cheaters, Campus PD!

For the most part, yeah, it's affordable to collect for. It has it's rarities, like any console, but a lot of the good games are actually pretty cheap. And the hardware itself is cheap.
