Re: Metal Heads Assemble!!
Hard to write off an entire subgenre. Metalcore is popular and there's some really great stuff but the majority is pretty awful
So it's basically like a Wii. 99% turd, 1% awesome.

What exactly is Metalcore? There seems to be new subgenres of metal popping up every single day. It's hard to keep up.Valkyrie-Favor wrote:Hard to write off an entire subgenre. Metalcore is popular and there's some really great stuff but the majority is pretty awful

I keep it simple: I like metal.

Re: Metal Heads Assemble!!
Metalcore is pretty much an umbrella term for all the metal/hardcore fusion bands around. Sometimes they have the best of both, sometimes they're straight death metal bands with a lot of breakdowns, etc. It's a bit hard to define since there are so many variations (like RPGs I guess). Unfortunately, most of the music categorized as metalcore sounds like this:
--Endless breakdown+autotune+random chick in a white dress. This is the type of band that is popular among middle/high school kids who don't know music. That little synth stuff at the end caught me so off guard that I started laughing though. It's the only good part of the song!
--Absolutely no thought went into this music. It's completely mind numbing, and that's the main problem with the majority of metalcore releases. Personally speaking, at least, people who listen to only metalcore are very casual and not into heavy music as much as they are the idea of heavy music. That's been my experience anyway.
On the other hand, the rare gems are really good. Take The Physics of Fire album by Becoming the Archetype is one of my favorite records. It's written incredibly well, and the musicians have awesome chops too. I'll link the first track, but the whole thing is wroth a listen. If you do, note the prog/classical influences. These guys know their stuff.
As They Sleep is another fun metalcore band. More metal than core, but that's how most of the good ones are. Dynasty album is standout.
Inevitable End is so heavy I'm not sure what it is, but someone told me it was metalcore and I guess I believe them.
I'm mostly into melodic, death, thrash, folk, viking when it comes to metal, but a really good metalcore album will always make my day

Ever notice how deathcore fans seem to have zero respect for the actual death metal bands that influenced their genre? You'd think a lot of them would actually find a lot to enjoy when it comes to bands like Suffocation, but they don't. Not enough staccato breakdowns I guess?

Re: Metal Heads Assemble!!
Fans of deathcore and only deathcore aren't even fans of music - "only pokemon" fans aren't really into gaming, and "only Texas Hold'Em" fans aren't really into cards, etc. I wouldn't really expect them to care about the genre they listen to if it's the only genre they listen too, as backwards as that is. They're looking for a very specific thing.
Someone sent me a free deathcore album and I didn't think it was too bad. "Crimson Armada." Not great, but passable.

I'd say this is true most of the time but definitely not in my case.AppleQueso wrote:Ever notice how deathcore fans seem to have zero respect for the actual death metal bands that influenced their genre? Nice to see that at least one of the Gothenburg bands are still going strong.

Re: Metal Heads Assemble!!

Anyone watching the show Metal Evolution on VH1 Classic? You should be! It's freaking fantastic! The show is basically a documentary series on the history of metal. It's made by the same guy that made the documentary film "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey".
Every episode follows a certain sub-genre of metal, such as pre-metal, glam metal, thrash metal, power metal, nu-metal, shock rock, etc. It's quite informative and entertaining. Check it out.
