The core of the combat system is hitting enemy weakness to break them. Every enemy is weak to two or more elements (where elements includes weapon classes), and every time you strike that element a counter ticks down. When it reaches zero then the enemy is broken. That cancels the enemy's turn in the current round, removes them from the next round, and lowers their defense across the board. After that, the counter refills to full. So you want to have a good spread of attack types, but you naturally get that because every character is getting a selection of that, as well as the availability of magic attack items. There's also a Brave-like system where you gain a charge every turn, can have up to five charges, and can use up to three charges in a turn. When you use one or more charges it makes you skip gaining one next turn, and a charge will let you attack an additional time with a weapon attack (which means a second strike against weakness) or to power up the damage of a skill. So there's some planning in terms of do you use your charges for breaking an enemy as soon as it gets back up or do you maximize the damage while the enemy is broken?

The Brave vs Default system in BD was something I enjoyed a lot. They badly just mishandled the job/system as it bloated out so much and they made bosses rely on a very specific job with a specific amount leveled up to get a certain skill allowed or boss fights were just not able to be completed which made for heaps of horrible grinding.
If this game as you said because of the split chapters each focusing on someone basically makes you level up various elements that give those skills (of which 2 work) to drop a boss during a battle into a state of stun basically until a meter fills, that's a huge improvement over that mess.
S-E has been a big mix on that junk for years. FF3 on DS was fine, but FF4 DS was so rigid with it the game was not fun at all. FF13 did it to a point but the two spinoff sequels abused it. BD did it as did the sequel so I didn't buy the second. Yet I like Setsuna and Lost Sphear as they didn't get that crazy.
It's why I asked. $60 is a bit much for me to gamble on and reviews didn't touch on it clearly to cover that kind of stuff just ganging up glowing how nice it is. I'll have to put it on my future radar since i missed the 20% prime discount.

What does registering your Amiibos to the Switch console do? Does it auto unlock things in applicable games?

So, weird thing to talk about.
A thread on a different site has raised a fear for, and I think most (future) retro gamers- there is some wackiness with how the Patches for Switch games work. If that thread is correct (I'm not sure it is-I've never heard anything else on it, and looking it up, everything was responses denying what that thread said) any update to a game is noted in the Switch's system memory. In such a case that you delete a patch, the game will not ever boot up again unless you bring the game back up to that update-you can't even play offline. These people claim this, stating that even deleting the post-patch saves for that game won't fix it.
Can anyone confirm or deny this? Even today, that can be a minefield for anyone buying a used Switch that doesn't have access to the internet. And this won't be any better once the servers go offline.

That sounds like trolling/fear mongering. I really do hope there is no truth to that. Sounds like it would be an easy thing to test though? I'm pretty sure it's false. In fact, I think I have deleted a patch before for a cartridge game and I was able to play without updating.

I've only heard one denial that claimed definitively, with no proof. Some say that deleting save data and factory resetting is the key to fix it-which isn't ideal.
I'm not saying anything definitive, just trying to figure out what is going on.
EDIT: Factory reset appears to work, based on a video using Mario Oddysey.

so I didn't previously understand that Pokemon: Let's Go Pikachu/Evee will be a remake of Pokemon: Gold, which was really the ONLY Pokemon game I ever got really into. So now I went from mild interest to super excited and definitely getting it.
