Awesome! I bet he is so excited to finally play the games that were inspired by the Halo Lego series of toys.dsheinem wrote:On Memorial Day weekend we bought my son a brand new Halo Wars Gremlin kit at a yard sale, since in the past he has very much enjoyed playing Halo with me and he loves building things with Legos and the like. I suggested that we soon have a "Halo Day" where we play Halo games, listen to the soundtracks, watch Halo related media, and - of course - build the Gremlin. He loved the idea and hasn't stopped talking about it since. Finally, today is that day. He's psyched!
We're stopping just now for lunch/nap after a solid three hours or so thus far. So far we played the first level of Halo 1 (co-op) and played "shooting hide and seek" on the second level, we played about 30 minutes of Halo 2 multiplayer (he loved taking two Ghosts onto the sea and having duels), and spent about the same amount of time in Halo 3 multiplayer (where using hammers made him giggle to no end). We're also half way through the steps for assembling the Gremlin. I'll post pictures later today of the finished product.
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

Halo Day has come to an end.
During his nap I put these posters up in the hallway outside his room to make things a bit more festive for him and started piping various Halo soundtracks on shuffle through the house for the rest of the day. He couldn't wait to show mom when she got home:
I also did up the TVs in the game room in Halo appropriate imagery:
This afternoon we finished the Gremlin and played with it a bit:
As far as playing the games, he watched me do a few solo waves (and took a turn or two himself) in Firefight in ODST, we then played a few rounds of rocket launcher/impact hammer deathmatch in Reach, and then about 4 or 5 games of Grifball in Halo 4 to wrap up the series proper.
We finished the day with this, which was a hit:
All in all we both had a blast. Halo is not one one of my favorite franchises nor is it really "retro" by most definitions, but I did pass onto him how fun it can be to be intensely focused on a game/series for a day and we had a lot of laughs and fun along the way. It was such a nice way to kill a day...perhaps I will do other "themed" days (around games or otherwise) in the near future.

Aw. Look at that proud face.dsheinem wrote:This afternoon we finished the Gremlin and played with it a bit:
It sounds like you two had a lot of fun together. You're a good dad, Dsh.

Sounds like lots of fun, dsh. I can't wait for my daughter to be old enough to actually play the games with me. Today I played some more Half-Life on the Dreamcast. She got out the controller, hooked it up, and sat next to me. When she realized that the controller did nothing she got angry and started asking for the one I was using. I think she figured out that not every controller works yesterday when I was playing Super Mario Bros. and she couldn't make Mario jump.

A proud moment...
Me: "I like the giant drill weapon"
Daughter: (with a devilish laugh) "So do I, it suits me!"
