Finished Batman # 2 and Nightwing # 2

Is it just me? Or is anyone noticing a similarity between the current Nightwing and Batman books? Dick and Bruce both talk about Gotham like it's a person. Both characters talk about how they know the city so well, but Dick acknowledges that Gotham still is able to surprise him, just when he thought there was nothing new it could throw at him. He kind of makes a big deal about that because after his stint as Batman he really thought he had Gotham figured out

Meanwhile, over in the Batman book, Bruce clearly believes that he knows Gotham inside and out and it is incapable of surprising him, which issue # 2 clearly shows is not the case.

I just like that symmetry, and how both books are taking the idea of Gotham personified in different directions. Plus, it just does a great job of showing how similar, yet different Bruce and Dick are, which is great considering that both of these men have been Batman(and of course, Bruce still is)

The Dick was Batman thing has me confused, because that implies that Batman "died" and the fallout of that actually happened. Which I thought wasn't the case now.

I'm also wondering how they're gonna handle the green lantern thing. From what I've heard, the reset didn't affect any of the lanterns, so surely they remember how things were before everything changed right? How will they interact with the other heroes then?

Actually Bruce never died. It turned out that he was lost in time. There was even an entire mini-series about a group of heroes who went back in time to try and track him down.

I think the way they're looking at it is in a similar way to the Post-Crisis universe. Anything in their history that contradicts the new universe, never happened. But anything that doesn't contradict the new universe, did happen. However, if a story contradicts the new universe that DC Comics deems important enough, they will retcon it to fit into the new universe (like adding Black Canary as an original member of the JLA rather than Wonder Woman).

Yup, I definitely see the similarities but I've come to expect it really. More so than Nightwing, Batman personifying the city within his inner dialogue isn't anything new. In Hush he talks about his body and his city betraying him (referring to the freefall that nearly killed him), and how he and the city have grown old together.

It was part of the vow he took when his parents were murdered; that every night he would protect the streets of Gotham. With that type of commitment and his vast resources I'd say it's a rather impartial assumption to make; him being savvy to the happenings of the city and relating to the city in the personal manner he does. He's always going on about Gotham being his city and gets pretty worked up about it at times.

Yeah, that's all very true. Good points. I just really enjoyed Dick being like Batman in that way that he relates to Gotham. Even with there being so many members of the Bat family, I still view Dick as his true successor and from what I have heard he filled that role well while Batman was away(I haven't actually read those books where he was Batman). Dick's my favorite Robin, though they are all cool in their own way(aside from the Robin name and costume, which I hate)

It's fun how all these different characters, even with them having their own lives and personalities, still have Bruce's shadow over them. In both the new Batgirl book and the Huntress mini-series, there is a moment where they do something and comment on how Batman would have done it better. There's a brief reference to the Robin identity starting the whole teen superhero thing in Teen Titans # 1 and it's not surprising to see Batman's presence in the first issue of Batwoman either without being too spoilery
