Golden Axe Warrior is pretty poor, with some terrible hit detection and combat mechanics. It's significantly worse than the game it apes. Neutopia is a much better Zelda wannabe.
I'll be the other extreme I guess.
I think Golden Axe Warrior is better than the original Legend of Zelda. It's less obscure, has better translation, and has less stiff controls (although it admittedly goesto far the other way and feels a bit too loose).

I know it's a relatively rare one, but the Genesis version is one of my favorite games on the system, and I've been thinking about adding the Master System version to my collection.

It's pretty much the exact same game, just in 8-bit. The music obviously doesn't stand up to the Genesis version. If you like the game on the Genesis you'll like it on the Master System but whether or not it's worth it to you will depend on your own personal sentimental value.
I've got a CIB REV 00 on the Genesis which still has a few bits of Thriller intact, thankfully procured for only a few bucks long before MJ passed away. It's one of my treasures now.

The Genesis one is single-plane as well. The arcade one is a completely different isometric game.

ooh, ok. I think I just assumed the Genny version was an arcade port. But yeah, the SMS game was fun enough.

We will agree to disagree. You should try Neutopia now that you have a PC Engine though. Bet we can find middle ground there.

Lucky! My copy is CIB, but it's got Another Part of Me instead of Thriller. Still an amazing song, but not nearly as fitting for a zombie level.
I think Golden Axe Warrior is the best 8bit Zelda clone... that I have played. (No, I haven't played Neutopia, Bone. My TG16 days were filled with cut-out selections unfortunately).
I think 3D Dot Game Heroes is the best Zelda clone. (This might be best left in the Unpopular Opinions thread, but I never got into Okami).
I think we can all agree that Axe Battler sucks as a Zelda II clone.

Okami is the best quality Zelda clone, I think, but I can definitely see why some might not like it; being a wolf all the time feel very different than being a human-esque guy with a sword. I, personally, loved it, but it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea.
