Having just finished Dark Souls, I think it's time to resurrect this thread and for me to play through it for the first time! I'm excited to share my thoughts as I journey through and eventually read back through this thread. More to come!

Yes! I loved Demon's Souls, and I think that you will too.

I also feel like everyone - except me - has beaten Dark Souls; so, you get "real, ultra, hardcore gamer!!!!!" cred if you beat Demon's Souls. (You basically blow the top off of the "real, ultra, hardcore gamer!!!!!" cred if you beat King's Field IV, and you transcend the flock like Jonathan Livingston Seagull if you beat the other games in the King's Field series. )

I do plan on playing King's Field IV actually, probably right after I beat Demon's Souls. I just gotta figure out how I'm gonna do that, since I don't have a PS2. >.<

A used system should cost you about as much as the game itself.

Oh snap, Demon's is next. Looking forward to watching your journey Stark. Prepare for something quite a bit more... obtuse in design, haha. But it'll be interesting to see what you think coming out of Dark.

Sums it up haha. It's weird that Demon's is still kind of obscure despite the success of Dark Souls and these games now. People just don't want to bother with a PS3 I guess. It's one thing for King's Field and Shadow Tower to remain obscure, but Demon's Souls is in every single way the literal blueprint for Dark/Bloodborne that followed. But I guess knowing some people thesedays, maybe 2009 is ancient history and far too old to go back to.

Took my first baby steps today. Gotta say I love the vibe of Boletaria and the fogginess is a nice atmospheric thing too. Controls a ton like Dark Souls, so I was in my element right away. There doesn't seem to be backstabs, unless I've just failed to execute one properly yet. Parry/riposte is the same though so that's cool. The demon in the tutorial was very much like the beginning demon in Dark Souls. Not super jazzed about the "you have to die here to continue" gameplay, but I'm over it already. It seems fairly linear so far, I could only find one way to proceed, to Boletaria Palace. Seems like a pretty typical opening area for a Souls game, I've only ran into one weird thing: the giant hole with swirling magical mist? Not sure if I should jump in there or not! :)

There are backstabs. They take some practice.

Apparently, you can kill it if you are really, really good. I think you get an extra cut scene where you die anyway, however. :)

Sure! Go for it!

Forward + R1 when behind an enemy? That's how it is in DaS. I'll go practice.

J, when you go play DaS, if you ever read a note that says "Try jumping", do it.

Backstabs don't have as generous of a sweet spot as they do in Dark Souls.

Once you get past the first stage the rest of the areas open up. It's basically an enforced "get prepared" section to teach you more about the shit you're in for beyond the tutorial, which is about teaching you the controls.

Did you play Dark Souls on the PS3? It's funny how Demon's seems to have a better framerate. I love the weird lightning too, you bloom a bit like a lamp yourself. It's strange but very appealing.

Yeah I don't really really bothering with backstabs at all, maybe against the silver knights here.

Did you ever use the Claymore in the other games? You have to see it here to believe it. The size is hilarious. It's what I used for my last Platinum character run.

The main things to note is that armor is more like Bloodborne here, and basically pointless beyond the cosmetics. It also doesn't hurt to try out some magic on the side or mess around a little with your build, it's definitely more forgiving than Dark Souls with stat distribution. Magic kind of becomes essential in NG+ runs but for a NG run it's probably a not big deal.

Tower Of Latria is one of my favorite areas ever in the whole franchise.

I love how Dark Souls 3 gave me a lot of serious Boletaria vibes with its castle areas, same with the Ivory King DLC area in Dark Souls 2.
