Last attempt was the iOS version, but I couldn't put up with the touch controls.

Nice! I just played last year - good game! I loved the job system. Mystic Knight FTW

I just finished Suikoden II, again - I think the last time I played it was when I was a kid, ~2003 or so. Fantastic even 10 years later. I'll try for Suikoden III next, or the FFX remake.

What others said, see it to the end! I'd argue it gets continually better as it goes up to the very end, whereas FFVI to me dips in the second half (especially plot wise, just kind of drops off). FFIV is awesome from start to finish, but FFV to me probably has the best gameplay in the franchise, and is consistently the most challenging.

The job system lends itself well to replays and variety. Not that I've replayed it yet, I can admit it took me 2 or 3 times myself to really get into it in the span of several years... but I'm glad I finally gave it a real chance after awhile. Turned out to be one of my favorites in the series.

We all know FFV tends to get overlooked being between titans of the series FFIV and FFVI, but I really enjoy its simple but fun narrative and engaging Job system. And by playing the Advance version, I get a kick out of the character's humor. I often catch myself grinning at the situation the party is in or something Galuf said to Bartz. I'm glad the translation team was allowed to take some liberties with the reportedly bland Japanese script.

Oh, ExDeath might be my favorite main FF villain as well. Yep, I don't hesitate to put him above Kefka at all.

Exdeath was surprisingly awesome for me. Didn't expect to like him as much as I did.

Anyone ever play the GBA version of Final Fantasy II?

Was it made significantly easier like part I was?

I wouldn't say it was made significantly easier. It probably was easier if you didn't try to abuse the system for power stats, but it was harder to massively power your characters (no select cancel trick, attacking yourself didn't help stats).

I think the GBA version is more user-friendly. You can quick-save, the graphics and sound are improved, etc. This makes it much more enjoyable and therefore "easier" to get through. I really liked it, and I don't think it held back the challenge. (My party was wiped out a few times, there are some steep difficulty spikes, you can wander into areas with monsters way above your level, etc. In other words, it "felt" like an 8-bit JRPG.) I did find ways to power-level my characters, however, and I spent quite a bit of time grinding spell levels and abilities. As a result, I was a bit overpowered by the end of the game, and regardless of your level, the blood sword makes the final boss ridiculously easy. Finally, there is some post-game content that is incredibly challenging, and I have yet to progress very far into it. (Your post reminded me that I need to go back and finish that up sometime...)

Over the weekend I started playing Mario & Luigi: SuperStar Saga and Nier (this counts as a RPG right?)

Enjoying them both quite a bit so far. The gameplay in Nier doesn't seem very deep do far but I'm curious to see where the plot goes in the game.
