I've played a bit of Nox. I remember liking it. WRPGs from the era are probably my favorite.
Curious to see what your Together RPG pick ends up being..... I have a couple of good ones in mind. Hint: both are on GOG.

Climbed on top of shinra HQ.....honestly if I hadn't been using the arcade stick, I would have given up half way through with the pain it would have given my thumb.
As for retro WRPGs: I find that they have much higher potential than retro JRPGs, but they REALLY suffer from their crappy interfaces. I played just 5 minutes of Ultima VII and I both thought "this is amazing" and "HOW THE FUCK DO I DO ANYTHING IN THIS GAME?"
That horrible font also doesn't help. Really THIS game could become a timeless classic if someone moded the interface and fonts. The graphics themselves are very pretty and the story is simply amazing, but I just can't enjoy it cause it's such a chore to play.

I remember seeing a trailer for Nox before the opening cinematics for Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun. I've always wanted to play it based on the gameplay I saw, and I love me some Diablo. Perhaps I'll have to pick it up and add it to my enormous backlog

Well decided to finally sit down and play dragon warrior on my nes...man this game is a pain to get enough gold to do anything...I'm half tempted to just put this thing on a shelf and try and find the gbc version. I'm trying to at least get something better than the bamboo pole but at this rate I don't think i'm ever going to reach it before I have to leave home today

The game is grinding.
Grinding is the game.
The GBC version is better, but I don't find the NES original offensively bad or anything. Just gotta have some patience.

Well I guess that is one thing i don't have, I don't even remember having to grind this much in ff1

It's totally worth trying. My suggestion would be to wait for a sale on GOG, which could be next week, could be a year, so you've got time.

I have done both of the entrances to Shinra HQ, and I never really liked either.
With Ultima, I find the camera angles in the mid-90s to be the hardest part of getting back into the series(though you're right, the font is murder on the eyes). You could admittedly try Ultima VIII or IX, though they pretty much killed the franchise, or you could go back to the other two story groups, Ultima I-III or IV-VI. I've also played through Akalabeth and didn't find it too taxing, but it's very rudimentary.
You know, I'm also drawing a blank as to what other games to recommend. If you were interested in Might & Magic or Wizardry, there are a lot of other dungeon crawlers I could suggest, like Legend of Grimrock, Stonekeep, or even Arx Fatalis. But Ultima...maybe the Exile series from the late 1990s?

It's easy to exploit the BASIC (I think?) code in Akalabeth to "cheat" like a boss. That's what I always did.
Ultima went straight down the crapper after VII, but I love those early games.
The Bard's Tale is a pretty sweet dungeon crawler series people often overlook. Been thinking about replaying the first game later in the year.

I ended up doing both because i got the password for the mayor wrong and I wanted that materia
The loud way in is pretty anti-climatic since when you get to the top the game just keeps playing like you are still on a stealth mission.
hahahaha, nooooooo. I've seen Spoony's reviews of those games, I'm REALLY not interested in those

.
I guess I will wait for Richard Garriot's spiritual successor to the series.

I actually played Akalabeth legit in high school, and I had a blast. It's pretty impressive how far things have come in both the series and the genre. I'm looking forward to November with the Ultima IV Together Retro playthrough.
If you haven't tried it, the mid-2000s The Bard's Tale remake is a totally different style but still a lot of fun and worth checking out.

Bah, Spoony. I suppose if the gameplay didn't interest you, yeah, you might as well avoid the main series. But don't automatically discount all of the spinoffs! The Ultima Underworld series is a totally different kind of beast, one that is more up my alley as a fan of FPS, and it helped lead to games like System Shock and Deus Ex(and supposedly the 1990 UU tech demo inspired the likes of Catacomb 3-D, Wolfenstein 3D, and eventually Doom). Again, Arx Fatalis is a spiritual successor to the UU games.
