So what have you guys been watching lately?

Saw the first episode of the new trek. Meh. Just meh. They did everything wrong. Enjoying Orville even more.

Other than that, I have watched Super Best Friends play Dark Souls, Dark Souls III & Bloodborne. I hope they do Nioh soon.

Honestly the Punisher trailer reflects all the same problems with the defenders trailer. Just a bunch of fighting with no hint at plot.

And I'm sure they'll fill 50% of the screentime with the forgettable villains talking about their forgettable plans.

I get the feeling Jessica Jones season 1 was as good as we're ever going to get.

I feel like it would actually be materially difficult to do better than Jessica Jones. You have to have more than just deep protags, but also deep and interesting antagonists. That's also why Daredevil season 1 worked.

Can you explain a little more about ST:D? Like what all is wrong with it.

Has anyone else watched it and care to give an opinion?

Simply it's JJ Trek. It's dumbed down. The writing is awful. The main character is unlikeable. The Klingons are changed for no reason other than just because, oh they are black but represent white nationalism (the producer admitted this) The first 5 minutes the main character breaks the prime directive. This is a hundred years before TNG but has more advanced tech. I don't mean 2017 production values as they are great. No I mean the in show tech is more advanced. They shit all over and ignore canon yet they claim it's prime universe. The Klingons care for their dead corpses. For 30 years we have been told they don't. Vulcans now have telepathy across light-years of space instead of the mind meld. Our main character is a fucking moron. The Klingon motivations are very weak. The show is all about war. Gone is the Trek about philosophy and bringing different races and species together. Gone is the message about hope for the future. Gone is that world-building TNG had. Gone is that feeling, man it would be nice to live in this era or this ship or world. It's dumbed down for the average person. It's not even good Sci-Fi. It's generic Sci-Fi. It's Star Trek in name only. It's no wonder. The guy who originally helmed the show was fired because he was going to make it Star Trek. CBS execs didn't want that. They wanted something edgier and appealed to the average joe. Look how that worked out for JJ Trek. They liked the first but by the 3rd film, no one watched it. That formula burned itself out and here they are trying it again and you have to pay for it no less. I have always wanted Trek to succeed even when it had problems. Voyager and Enterprise had problems but rooted for them when they did better. I knew they were at least trying to remain faithful to the vision but the writing wasn't always the best. The 4th season of Enterprise they finally got it. Voyager had good moments. This show? They are not even trying. They don't want to either.

I think it's a bit early to nail the coffin shut on Star Trek: Discovery. We've had the pilot and that's it. Personally I quite enjoyed it for what it was. It looks great and there is potential for an interesting look at the early Federation in conflict with an aggressor race. (On a side note it's odd to me that Trek fans have clamored to see the Federation/Klingon war for years and when they finally get it they bitch because the klingon's look different. Cos the Klingons have always looked the same, amirite?)

I don't think it's possible to make a big budget sci-fi show like Next Gen or DS9 anymore, not in a post Battlestar/Netflix world. It's a shame but I also have collectively 28 seasons and 10 films of old Trek (along with countless books, comics, videogames, fanfilms, ect) so it's not really the end of the world. I'll judge it when I see the whole season.

I dunno, I think it's entirely a matter of what "takes" when it's released. Syfy has still done other shows that are solid - The Expanse in that genre - that might not have the same overall feel to them as older Trek, but are still notable sci-fi shows. Amazon also just recently announced an adaptation of Ringworld (alongside Lazarus and Snow Crash). There's likely to be enough out there for audiences to show an interest in that sort of material, and maybe see genre TV shift back towards that from superhero stuff.

STD has a huge budget per episode. 6 million. Much higher than TNG/DS9/Voy had.
