Actually, my example was a bit wrong. The 'real world issues discussion' circle would be a smaller circle within the 'hurling insults' circle. I didn't mean to imply those are the only threads where that happens!

No, but neither do most of the other posts in those threads. Let's be clear - I'm not calling these thread shitshows because of the subject matter, but because of the actual direction the conversation has headed. Often I'm actually quite interested to read the threads in question, but by the time I get to them the flaming has already begun and it feels like a waste of time. The conversation has normally spiralled off somewhere into pedantic nitpicking or hurling insults and the actual topic of the thread has been mostly forgotten.

Which is the way I've seen every political or religious oriented thread degrade on every forum ever. And is why I try to refrain from getting involved with them here, even when I think I have something interesting to say. The truth is everyone has their own hardcoded opinions on this sort of stuff, and nobody is going to change anyone's mind, no matter how detailed or logical the debate. Rather egos get bruised, and emotions get riled, and it turns into:

I believe the political threads around here, are really what have done a lot of damage to this community over all. With people getting pissed at each other, and feeling ostracized, or whatever. So they leave. Didn't everyone come here to talk about video games? If you want to fiercely debate politics or socioeconomic theories, there are actually dedicated forums for that. You'll find legions of folks there willing to argue till their fingers fall off.
