With that being said does anyone know if it's possible (from a technical standpoint) that there is a patch for the WiiU to play Wii games in a higher resolution, or is it limited by hardware?
There is no WiiU homebrew scene as of yet, at least as far as I know.
Just jumping in on the Dolphin discussion, I use the Linux version with the OpenGL plugin on my PC and it's fantastic. My video card is an NVIDIA GTX 660 and it runs games in 1080p no problem, so I don't see why the Wii U couldn't in theory anyway.
There's been speculation that Sony might try to do something official like that for classic titles on the PS4, emulators with options or something. Who knows, but yeah PS2 games can look pretty dang amazing with better resolutions and some filters, etc, I can imagine the same happens with Wii games. I agree they look ever so slightly better on the Wii U with HDMI and all, but yeah. Still a bit jaggy and PC emulating looks far better in comparison.

Well, we're probably have Mario Galaxy HD released for the Wii U at full price. That's why.

Nintendo are the last ones I'd rag on about abusing HD ports. The changes and additions to Wind Waker were fantastic. They definitely didn't just throw that one out.
I wouldn't rag on them for it, but it's undeniably got to be a legitimate reason for them not wanting to have Wii games upscaled in HD with all the tricks the Dolphin emulator uses. I'd do the same thing in Nintendo's shoes.

Good point. They were supposedly toying around with Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword while working on the HD upgrade for Wind Waker. I'd love to see those two get the same treatment as well.
Of course, if this stuff already displayed better in the first place that'd be even better...but yeah haha. Can't win.
Yeah, it would be awesome to have HD remakes of Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. Especially if they gave you the option of playing with wii remote motion controls or a traditional control method with the gamepad.

I'd be more excited for an updated console version of Ocarina - they might actually tip me over and make me buy a Wii-U. Oh well, I'll have to settle for the N64 version instead
The only problem is Wii games aren't being emulated on Wii U. It runs Wii stuff in Legacy circuits. The only reason why it upscales the final image at all is because the GPU likely does it anyway.
I think equating this to how Sony handled PS2 support on PS3 is not accurate. (Where they did indeed hold back PS2 compatibility through emulation and then proceeded to do PSN releases and HD remakes.)
