Castlevania Symphony of the Night (PS1)
Chrono Trigger (SNES)
Shadow Hearts (PS2)
YU-NO (PC)
Phantasy Star (SMS)
Yoshi’s Island (SNES)
Prince of Persia (SNES)
Super Metroid (SNES)
DOOM (GOG)
Donkey Kong Country (SNES)

And DOOM is done! :D I had a few troubles with the 2nd last level (Limbo I think?) because it was so mazey so even after I had all the keys I didn't really know where to go. I had to look up a walkthrough to finish that one off. That level I did get 100% on everything without a guide, so that should count for something right? :P

The final boss also ended up being easier than episode 2's boss because I found a way to cheese it haha. I was standing on the opposite of the area from the boss, and for some reason he was just standing there shooting at me, but his shots didn't have enough range to hit me. My rocket launcher could hit him though, so I just stood there shooting rockets at him until he died  It was a little tricky getting the aim right (he was just a blob of pixels haha), but it didn't take much effort to take him down once I found that out.

Looking at the game as a whole, I don't think I enjoyed the game too much. I think the biggest thing that I didn't like was I thought it would be more pewpewpew and less wandering around looking for things. I wouldn't say it was bad, but I'm not really good with puzzley things and the puzzley maze stuff was a bit too high for my tastes. I'm going to post in Games Beaten thread as well so I'll leave it at that ha.

Next game I'm thinking will either be Super Metroid or Donkey Kong Country. Haven't decided which yet.

The other way of cheesing the Spider Mastermind is to get in his face with the BFG9000; depending on how the random number generator is feeling he dies in either one or two shots. And by in his face I mean you should be almost giving him a hug.

Made some edits to the original list I made a month ago. First, I removed Dragon's Curse in favor of Wonder Boy in Monster Land (I had been mixing up the series release order in my head). Second, I realized my list was very shmup-heavy so I swapped out R-Type in favor of Kid Icarus, which I have been meaning to finish for the longest time...

Finalized list:

Scramble
BurgerTime
Pole Position
Kung-Fu Master
Hikari Shinwa: Palutena no Kagami / Kid Icarus
Life Force
Wonder Boy in Monster Land
Bloody Wolf
Lords of Thunder
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest

My eldest daughter is in school now, so I'll consider her vacation "summer." So I'll begin in a couple of weeks.

I decided to try and play Donkey Kong Country. I'm only on the 2nd area and it's already brutal. I got 3 game overs on that mine cart level alone! I eventually did get past it, but then I got another game over at that mean stop and go level :( Back to the mine cart level I go...

To be fair, I'm really bad at platformers, but I'm already finding this so frustrating! Gah!

I've always felt like DKC is a really unforgiving game. Once you get good it can be poetry in motion, but the curve is steep.

Hey lauren, grats on DOOM!

As far as Donkey Kong Country goes, just out of curiosity, have you read the manual? I ask because I played through the game a few years back with no prior experience, and when I was done, I was discussing how unfair I thought certain jumps and enemy/banana placements were with my BFF. She, being a huge fan of the game, started dropping knowledge like, "Wait, did you not know Diddy can jump mid-cartwheel even if he's in mid-air?" and "Oh, but Diddy CAN defeat those enemies easily -- just not by bouncing on their heads like you thought you had to." And I was like, "...ohhhh."

When I read the manual later, I feel like a lot of these maneuvers were directly and unambiguously explained there. Would have made my playthrough waaaay easier if I'd done my reading first!

Just wanted to bring this up in case you'd stumbled into the same pitfall as I had.

Both Kongs can do that jump out of a roll off the cliff; it's just that Diddy's is more useful because he covers more ground with a roll. There's also the fact that you get a speed boost when you roll into an enemy, which increases for every enemy you hit in the same roll.

Another game that has some non-intuitive jump physics is the original Metroid. If you unmorph you can immediately jump, even in midair. Similarly, if you are standing and a bomb pushes you up into the air you can jump in midair.

I put an hour and a half into Dive: The Medes Island Secret tonight, and I'm already halfway done with it. I find this interesting, because I'd read over and over again how "hard" this game is supposed to be. It's not hard at all so far.

The difficulty in the game is a bit uneven. I find that most deaths are caused by holes, not enemies. So the stages that take place over giant chasms are among the hardest. There are only a couple of mine craft levels total. You can do it!

And remember, if your lives get low you can go back to the first stage and farm 1-ups.
