I've been a fan of Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island for years.

My wife played the first Gabriel Knight, and I sort of helped her w/ a few puzzles so it wouldn't be really "new" to me.

Sam & Max is actually a good possibility though. I know there's a lot of them - I assume "First Encounter" is the first?

But before I decide to go w/ Sam & Max, or any adventure game for that matter, is there perhaps any other genre that anyone sees lacking in my list that would be a better fit for balance?

The first Sam and Max game is Sam and Max Hit the Road.

Sam & Max Hit the Road is a LucasArts point-and-click adventure game that was released years before TellTale revived the series. (It is also, IMO, one of the very best SCUMM games.)

But before I decide to go w/ Sam & Max, or any adventure game for that matter, is there perhaps any other genre that anyone sees lacking in my list that would be a better fit for balance?

Music & Rhythm? Games like Samba De Amigo, Space Channel 5, etc. might be good additions to your list.

I also don't see any games from the "diabetes" genre. Perhaps he should consider Packy & Marlon or Captain Novolin.

At least it wasn't Bronkie the Bronchiasaurus, the only game to teach children how to use their inhaler while stopping the dinosaurs from going extinct due to dust storms giving them asthma...thus stopping the evolution of mammals and forever dooming mankind.
