I'm wondering, can anybody give me an estimate of how far I am in the game?
The game is stupidly hard when you're just Gobi. If you wander around outside the town you'll get owned pretty bad. Things are fine once the other party members join, which happens really quickly from what I recall.

Hard to say how far you are... there's no in-game timer from what I recall... Maybe half-way?

Cool, sounds good. Gobi was difficult at first, but I found some easy tricks to do: first, carry a shield he can equip to help his lackluster defense, and as soon as you make it to Prima, upgrade his gear to the best equipment available: HornHT, IcySH, SpineCL, and the Javelin. That will seriously help him survive. Then buy a stack of herbs and wander around outside the city using EbbX to do heavy damage and the E.Key. Gobi's a pretty bland character, so even with the Javelin, the E.Key does better damage. Plus it does about as much damage as his Ebb spell is but costs him no AP. Wander around using the Herbs to heal whenever Gobi needs to and then go back into town and sleep at the 200 gold inn to restore AP. He starts at level 15, so get him to 16 and he gets his Echo spell, which is slightly more costly but will kill some of the enemies around Prima in one hit. Get him to 17, and he gets EchoX, which should easily take out everything there. Plus at 17 his health should finally be in triple digits.

If the Javelin doesn't float your boat for a weapon for him, in Gant you can buy the HeroSp, which should boost his attack over 100 or so. From there, it's actually pretty easy to use him, and the amount of experience he gets for being alone helps to boost him relatively quickly.

Jeanne D'arc (PSP)- This has to be one of the best rpg's I have played (IMHO)
I've sank 13 (registered) hours and another 6(unclocked) hours(mainly because if you die your data is deleted and you have to start over. To avoid such insult to injury I pop out my SD card  )
I have been powering up for the last 3 hours to try to beat a skid mark named Talbot. I believe I'm at the battle where talbot ambushes you for like the 3rd time (might be 10th battle in the game) .
I am pretty set on beating this game, only other rpg's Ive beat are the Pokemon series games :|

@Ack

The thing that always annoyed me about Gobi was the fact that the damn underwater town has about a million shops. I remember equipping him with weapons and armor and then realizing that the shop next door had better stuff.

By the way, a spoiler ahead - read if you want........
Breath of Fire has two endings - a normal one and a "good" one. Getting the good one hinges on finding something very specific and out-of-the-way - it's not exactly intuitive or something you'd come across during a normal playthrough. For years I thought there was only one ending (the normal one) until I read a certain Nintendo Power issue, exclaimed "holy shit!", and reloaded my last save.

Haha, yeah, I spent a good half hour walking around that town and comparing each piece of equipment. I made it a point to only look at one item slot at a time, so first I looked at only weapons to easily compare, and then helmets, shields, and finally armor. With that focus I eventually figured out the best stuff I could get without too many issues, but it did take me some time to do.

I will keep that spoiler in mind. It's something that I admit I was completely unaware of.

I started battling the final boss again this morning! Seems to be going well so far, Debilitate is helping a lot. Thanks for the encouragement/advice: Ack, Erik, Popo!

Quick update:
Still half way through Shining Force 3 and have not played since I asked about leveling up... I lost a little motivation to play due to exhaustion now that the track season has started and it has yet to be over 30 degrees while we are outside.

I have been playing a little bit of Lunar on my newly acquired PSP and have just left Saith and am on the boat. Lunar for the SCD was the first RPG I ever beat and still to this day my favorite. I have never finished the PS1 remake because it didn't feel right. I am a little more into this version because it's on a handheld... I don't know why that matters but it does for some reason.

Ok, since last posting, Ox and Bleu have joined my party, and I am currently protecting Prima from the Dark Dragon invasion. I'm a little annoyed with Ox right now, since he takes FOREVER to level up. Currently only Ox and Bleu are below level 20, but Bleu comes at level 19, and I haven't gotten a chance to use her in a fight yet, so that's not really her fault. Karn is at 22, and Ryu, Gobi, Bo, and Nina are all level 25 or higher(I took the time to get Gobi to level 20 while he was by himself).

For my party, I'd been using Ryu, Nina, Ox, and Karn in his Shin form fused with Gobi and Bo, but now that I have Bleu, I'm not sure who will go into the back row...definitely not Ryu or Karn. So that leaves Nina(my dedicated healer), Bleu(my offensive mage), or Ox(my mop-up tank). Argh, I need more Karn transformations so everyone can be in my party!
